What type of bike?

Ok, I should be getting my permit this Monday, and I was just wondering what type of bikes you guys would suggest for a beginner. (Street bikes)
I don't have a lot of money, so I want cheap, and it can't be too big because my mom sucks and says so. (She says a 750 is too big.. bah, whatever.) Anyway, I really don't want a 250, I'd like more like a 400cc or something, don't know what the biggest she'll allow me to have is.
Anyway, I don't want a crotchrocket, I want a cruiser.
Any suggestions?
