I dont know if I just have new bike fever but I have been thinking about a new 250 four stroke but I dont know how much better these bikes are and the reliability is from storys I
hear I am a fast c slow b woods rider at best my bike is a 2001 kdx200 with kx125 fork mx tech revale, fmf pipe,rb carb,
ect thanks for any help

I wouldn't go to a 250 four-stroke. They aren't all that powerful and they are brutal to start if you stall. Why not look at a KTM200EXC or GasGas EC200? They have more pep than a 250f, start easy and weigh less. Not to mention maitenance is a lot easier.

That's some out-dated info bro.

What's out-dated about it?

The 200EXC (now called XC for 06) and EC200 both make over 30 horsepower. That's competitive with all the 250f's except the KTM250SXF (it's a monster). This past weekend in a race I passed a guy on a KTM250SXF after he stalled. It took him close to 5 minutes to relight the sucker. I can dump my bike and it never takes more than 5 kicks even after going over the bars (tested that as well on the weekend). The 200EXC weighs less than a 250f ready for offroad and the Gasser is about the same, maybe a little more, but the two-strokes tend to feel lighter due to less rotating mass, atleast in my opinion. And there's no way anyone can say that the new 250f's are easier to work on than a ring-dinger. Especially the enduro two-strokes, which can get a couple years out of a piston and rings.

I stand by my previous statement.

Any 250F will have it all over a KDX. Power, suspension, comfort...but most importantly, confidence. A modern dirtbike (2 or 4 stroke) will give you greater confidence than the KDX does. The KDX's are "nice" bikes, but when the poop begins to hit the sling, I'd much rather be on a modern dirtbike.

A CRF250X might be a good choice, if you can stand the price. I love mine. After 200 + miles the valves are still spot on. But I don't ride around at 13,000 rpms all day either.

dude i kdx's are extremly nice bikes. Its got plenty of power, and why arent they modern bikes? i mean they still make them, so they must be a good bike. My 220 can practically go up anything. issed:

The KDX is based off of 15 year old technology. Look at a mid 80's motocrosser's suspension. It'll be pretty much the same as the KDX stuff. The KDX is still a good bike, but if he's looking for something newer/better, there is something out there.

dude, i totally agree with Okie and C.O. 250f's are awesome, easy to maintain, fast, reliable, and most important, fun. my yz250f is faster and has more power than my friend's new rm 125. CRF250X's are wicked nice all-around bikes as well, good for blowin' around and trail riding.

Power-wise, how does a KDX200 w/ FMF pipe compare to a 250F? I'm also considering a swap, and trying to decide on a 250F or a 250 2-stroke.

I love the smell of premix in the morning, so I'm leaning towards a 250 2-stroke. But I don't know how big a step up in power this will be.

I'm with Captain Obvious (a former KDX owner) on this. I rode a YZ250F last summer and was blown away by how it felt. I was more confident on that bike, in 5 minutes, than I was on my KDX200 after a year of riding it! Trails, track, whatever, it just made no difference; the YZ250F was a more confidence-inspiring mount IMO. I can only imagine what something like a CRF250X would be like. I'm pretty sure I'll upgrade at some point, just not sure when or what bike.

Dirt Bike magazine has a great article this month about woods-hopups for a KX250F, maybe something to think about?

Why restrict yourself to the 250 class thumpers? The KTM 400 and 450 4-strokes are flat awesome. Great power, handling, suspension and reliability. Plus you get the electric start so stalls and crashes are less traumatic. At least as far as restarting goes.

I thought all of the 250 class thumpers I've ridden to date had a noticable lack of grunt. Not to mention odd handling.

From the KDX you could easily jump into a 250 2 stroke as well. Both the KTM 250 and 300 are awesome bikes. If buying used go for the EXC, the 06s are all XCs.

Avoid the MX or SX bikes if you're used to the KDX. They have no flywheel weight so they stall, repeatedly and often, and they are a handfull in tight technical conditions.
