how does insurance work with bikes? is it treated like an off-road vehical like a quad or wat? will i need to get my motorcycle lisense? can u even get insruance for dirtbikes?

Progressive usually has the best bike coverage/price policy but some others cover dirt bikes as well. Best to check all the specifics with your insurance person or the company you are things about using to get the specifics of coverage, requirements and limits.

Insurance requirements are going to vary state by state. In addition to Progressive, try your regular insurance carrier for a quote. I really like Bike-Line at www.bike-line.com (Markel Insurance). Here in Michigan, Bike-Line does not tack on the $140 MCCA fee that Progressive and most others do. I pay $197 for two bikes.

I believe that you are going to need some sort of motorcycle endorsement on your driver's license to ride a bike on the street (assuming it's street legal).

im not getting a street legal bike, but say i get a KTM 250sx, will they treat is an "off-road vehical" like and ATV for insurance or do i need a motorcycle lisense to insure it?

The vast majority of riders do not have any dirt bike specific insurance for liability, damage or theft.

If you had a street legal bike, you would need to conform to the requirements of your state if you ride it on the street.

i have progressive on all my bikes, dirt and street. i asked for fire and theft only on my dirt bikes but they said they couldn't do that, that you had to buy comprehensive just as you would a street bike. its really cheap here, under $70 a year total for my three bikes.
