When did motocross go yuppy?

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

Posted by: slickpuss---------------------

My whole life ive rode bikes and watched races and have never seen the kind of people attracted to the sport lately. Not a dis but an observation that a lot of people are showing up at the track lately pulling a lil trailer behind thier BMW or Lexus, or the occasional hummer. I grew up in a motocross world where most people off the track were blue collar (mostly construction) people who drove trucks, worked hard, played hard and didnt mind getting dirty. I see more pretty bikes and spotless gear now than ever. Also a lot of one hour sessions. I guess those soft callous-less hands hurt to much after a few laps. Perhaps its just California.

Posted by: JuliusPleaser---------------------

You mean someone has the nerve to tow a bike trailer with a BMW?

What's the world coming to?

Posted by: Ruff Rider---------------------

I agree with you - and i think both fmf and fox is encouraging it. I think that most people who wear fmf or fox clothing dont even know what either brand does or make. "It's the California look."

FYI regarding JPs comment, he's trying to remove stereotypes from society

Posted by: JuliusPleaser---------------------

I guess I looked like a yuppie dork when I towed my CRF450 and my XR50 to Dirtweek last year. . .behind my BMW.

Posted by: slickpuss---------------------

I never said dork. Yuppie, most definitely.

Posted by: taraker---------------------

I found life more enjoyable when I'm inclusive, rather than exclusive

& some of the people I ride with will take serious offense to your comments

but then again your probably just some kid without a clue. issed:

Posted by: Papakeith---------------------

lol, JP you, you, you yuppie you.
I don't much care what you drag your bike to the trail/track with. As long as you enjoy what you are doing, it's all good.

Posted by: tyesai---------------------

At least it isn't as yuppy as Harley Davidson.

Posted by: Senior KX Rider---------------------

Here is your basic yuppie motocrosser

Posted by: SpDyKen---------------------

Nice photo! I think we're ALL turning a bit Yuppy-ish (??) as our generation (10- 50) becomes increasingly more affluent.

That guy was really nice, too. He used his turn signals and everything.

Some people have money and are able to buy nice vehicles, new bikes and new gear when things wear out. Some of us are just starting out and don't have a lot of nice things. So we take good care of what we do have.
Gear is expensive we take care of it. After riding the bikes are thorougly washed, dried, and chain waxed. Boots are scrubbed and cleaned up. The gear gets shout on it and soaks before it is washed and then it is hung up to dry. So my gear is always spotless and my bike looks pretty good for an '01.
Back in the day a Hummer, Lexxus, BMW, etc probably weren't available. If they were they were probably way over priced, more so than now.
If I paid that much for a nice car I would tow my bike with it too. I can't afford it though, so my SUV and his truck work just fine.
Also, I think that motocross is more of a family deal now than it was when the sport was first taking off. Now it's all about comfort for the family. so if the Lexxus, Hummer, or BMW is the family vehicle then maybe that's what they drive to the races to watch sister or junior race.
Just my .02

Here someone goes making sense, all Slick wanted to do was bash some white collared folks and you have to ruin it. I wanted to help him too, but you took the wind out of my sail. At least it has been shown that us economically challenged have more fun in bed. Although Beamers, Lexus and Hummers still ARE expensive.
<<MOD EDIT: you should know better than that>>

Posted by: tyesai---------------------

I hope that doesn't make to much sense

Don't have a fancy car ... do have an '05 4x4 4dr 2500 HD Duramax/Allison Silverado though ... I currently own 5/72nds of it ... the bank owns the balance.

Spotless bikes ... obviously you have never ridden with me or seen my garage I finally washed my 650 last week from a ride a month ago. My boots are still sitting in the dining room where I left them ... muddy. My gear is clean though. I went to the laundrymat one morning last week after finally running out of underwear ... I know ... TMI

haha, i'm currently looking for a bike, I wonder what it's gonna look like towing it behind my 330xi, I think maybe B.F.c poll might be in order on wether my car can handle it

Posted by: FruDaddy---------------------

I could probably buy a BMW if it weren't for the frumonkey's racing. If I had a beemer, I would still haul his bike to the track on the back of my truck. Can't be having such a nice car covered in all of that dust from the track. Come to think of it, the beemer fund would be better spent on a trailer containing all the ameneties of home and a garage out back.

Welcome to DRN.

Your 330 has close to 230 HP and 4WD, too. Shouldn't be a problem, but you might want to check with a dealer if your car is an automatic.

My E36 M3 is a 5-speed, and I got 20 mpg on the way to Oklahoma while hauling a three-rail trailer packed with bikes and gear.

Still hit 0-60 in 6 or 7 seconds, too.

I think i'll just finish up the fj40 and use that as the tow vehicle, although i'd worry more about people stealing that then the bmw...

it would be a nice treat to ride home in comfort and style, and of course good A/C in the summer.

on another note, i've seen base model x5 lease returns going for very reasonable prices, i'm sure with the price of gas lately they might be getting cheaper as well... can't beat that for hauling...

Posted by: FruDaddy---------------------

Yeah, I used to drag a couple minis, tools, and everything else, behind a 5-speed Maxima with no probs. Generally automagics will tow more. Don't sweat it unless you start dragging an enclosed trailer. Just know your tow rating and the rating on the hitch.

Somebody showed up at Dirtweek '02 with a brand new loaded X5 hauling an enclosed trailer. I asked him how it worked, and he said it was perfect for towing.

The M3 was much more comfortable than the truck I used the previous 4 years. Better mileage, too.

Posted by: mx547---------------------

you guys are soooooo yuppie. i don't even know what an x5 is.

Doesnt fmf make stuff for small airplanes??

So a company wants too make a buck, go figure...

I'm with you on that one too! I have driven all kinds of cars (I was a shop manager over tires/oil couple of years ago) and never seen one of those thingys. I know what a lot of cars are by looking at them, what oil filter and how much oil they take. You got me on whatever kinda car you guys are talking about.

The only thing I ever drove that I didn't know was an Avanti. I just remember the guy saying, "The manager is the ONLY one to touch my fifty-thousand dollar car." "I just paid it off and I don't want it scratched. ALSO, park my fifty thousand dollar care EXACTLY where I parked it!" That guy checked everything before he left the parking lot. ugh..

Anyway, I'm going to do a search on one of those cars.

Its a BMW suv, kinda cool, but i'd rather have a truck..

Posted by: MXGirl230---------------------

Ahh they are BMW models...don't recognize it with just the number and letter. Oh yeah the X5 is the SUV, never had one of those in either. I think because we didn't carry the filter for either one.

Posted by: 2stroke---------------------

Even among the vintage crowds I run with, you have your differences between riders and equipment. Some have $60,000 RVs set up with generators and SPOTLESS museum quality Maicos and stuff.

I try to park my 160,000 miles old minivan and stripped down enduro somewhere on the other end of the pits, but hey Im not complaining! I have as much fun as the next guy regardless!

I think the changing crowds and participants are just a sign of the sport's growth.

oh, a "i bought it because i could" vehicle.

when i was a teenager my dad brother and i would pile into his 1990 dodge carvan with 160k to go riding, the thing had tons of space and did the job perfectly... of course every time we took it into service the guys that worked there would be amazed it was still on the road...

there's nothing wrong with towing a brand new gas gas fse 450 behind a year old bmw... i work very hard, and for alot of hours...

Posted by: SpDyKen---------------------

When I think about it, I've come a long way since I welded up some bumper racks to haul my 1975 CR 125 to the track, with a 4 cyl. Chevy Vega, no less!

Posted by: Danman---------------------

Not a thing wrong with it if you ask me. I think it also has a lot to do with the average buyer. The same guy bought a bike when he was younger and could not afford a nice ride and a new bike. Now he is a bit older and can have both. Great I say. As for me. My truck and my current ride seem to put a smile on my face so I can't complain.

Posted by: JuliusPleaser---------------------

There's a local guy that drives a $400K motorhome to the track and has his wife follow him in an Audi TT coupe or a new Mercedes E class.

He doesn't race, but his kid has a trio of KTM 50's.

I've got an E36 M3 aswell, but mine is the 6 speed version. It's 321bhp standard, do they have less power in the states? Useless info soz! Im not a yuppy though, I dont use it to transport my bike!

I didn't do a search, but what I know about the Avanti is this...it is HANDBUILT from top to bottom. I think cycle rate (build time) is about two-four weeks per vehicle.
Built in the old Studebaker plant in Indiana, and by workers that average 72 years old.
Probably one of the most unique cars in existance.
I would doubt 50k would touch one these days though.

Hmmmm wonder how of those fancy high-doller BMW's would compare to the price of a F350 King Ranch with all the goodies?

Ahhh...I did a small search on them and his was older. A lot more boxy. I thought it was one of the most ugliest things I have ever seen anyone drive. It was also a convertable. Most of their website is under construction. One of those 75yr olds must be slowly working on it.

The King Ranch those are NICE. The old farmer that owned one of those requested that only I touch his truck. He said it was the first new truck he has ever owned. Guess he decided to go all out.

At one of the fair races a few years ago a family showed up in their Cadillac truck towing one of the race package enclosed trailers with 4 bikes in it. There were two kids they each had two bikes. They rode one in practice and the other was the "race" bike. They also changed gear after practice and each moto. I remember the mom complaining because her white shorts were dirty.

The dad was mad because neither kid did very well at all. He was going on and on about spending all this money and how bad they were making him look in front of HIS friends.

Posted by: cnielse5---------------------

when bought my 03 bike, and loaded it on to the trailer that i was pulling behind my $750 1996 Chevy corsica. I tripled the value of my vehicle. Do I qualify as a yuppie?

Posted by: FruDaddy---------------------

Would the bikes in that 400k mobile home have a big 2 on each number plate?

We poor Americans are only allowed 236 bhp in the E36 M3. We didn't get the 321 bhp engine or the 6-speed until the E46 arrived. I've driven the new M3 with the 6-speed, and it's a most impressive automobile.

I can't imagine how much better my car would be with the Euro engine/trans.

Mine is a 3.2 OBDII with the 5-speed, and I have a Da'Lan receiver hitch.
