Hi sorry for the basic question but I am completley confused as to gearing. What gearing is 14 48 on a 2002 crf450. Is it about right for normal use?

Std gearing listed in service manual is 13/50 (3.846) for 02-03 and 13/48 (3.692) for the 04. Not sure what normal use is considered and it depends on your track. I've ran 13/49 (3.77) and just recently bought 14/53 (3.79) many riders prefer the 14/52 (3.71) combo. Don't remember where I read it but Windham/RC/Hughes/Lewis/Huffman all ran 14 tooth front sprocket 52-54 rears it seemed to apply power smoother out of the corners and have less tendency to stall. With the gear ratios being almost identical 13/48 and 14/52 they found the 14/52 combo more to their liking. Maybe someone else read the article and knows what they found I don't remember their reasoning. With this said if riding offroad desert open areas with little technical climbs and slow single track I would run the 14/48 and use 13/48 for mx since you already have the 48. swapping to the larger 52/54 will require longer chain.
