Who makes the best pipe guard

I have recently moved to the Albuquerque NM area where just about all the trails are very rocky. I need to add a pipe guard to protect my FMF pipe. I see where carbon/kevlar guards are available for $100. Then Freddette has a fiberglass for about half that. Does anybody have experience with either of these pipe guards?

If you know you're going to hit rocks, I suggest the Moose one.

Put a big glop of silicon on each fin and let cure, before bending into place, so the pipe's finish isn't compromised, but corrosion shouldn't be a problem for you there. It also dampens any buzzing and rattles.

If your just want a mud flap to keep it pretty, then the plastic ones should suffice.

Do NOT get a metal pipe guard. Sure, your pipe won't dent, but instead you run the chance of wrecking the exhaust flange or cylinder, as all the stresses that the pipe would absorb will now be transfered to the flange and cylinder. I recommend the eline carbon fiber pipe guard. I have one on my Gasser and have tested it quite often over the summer. It is a little scratched but my pipe is in great shape and the cylinder and exhaust flange are also fine. Carbon fiber is the only way to go, in my opinion.

I believe I bought mine from Jeff Fredette, it is similar to the e-line and made specifically for the pipes that fit the KDX 200 / 220.
I have had no problems with it, at times I remove it when giving a good cleaning.
FMF Desert (Rev')
It has saved me from some good dings

I too am in the market for a pipe guard as I'm trying to ready my bike for Loretta this year. Let me make sure I'm following you. An aluminum guard will not "give" and will put more stress on the flange. Yet, a plastic/carbon guard will give somehow ? If thats the case how does it guard the pipe? Something sounds fishy here.

My e-line has saved my pipe several times. It covers much more surface than the metal ones. It works by being a cast fit, so it distributes impact over a wide surface of the pipe when it gets smacked.
It will eventually wear out. I've worn out two of them, that's how much I crash!! Ha! They eventually will wear away on the areas that contact the ground. Especially if the bike is still moving at a good pace when that happens. My trailer flipped with my bike on it while towing on a twisty mountain road. The bike, in a bike shoe, stayed attached for some time, skidding on the pipe guard. I still use the same FMF pipe and it is in perfect shape.

Moose guard, tried and true. Get Superman to bend it for you though, the things a monster to shape.

Moose guard is the best protection. But like others have said rtv the inside of the guard.Carbon fiber and fiberglass tend to get weak with heat and age.

The carbon fiber will give slightly under a major impact, so you might get a small flat spot in the pipe, which is a lot better than ripping bolts out of the cylinder, IMHO. The aluminum guard will transfer all impact energy to the flange/cylinder so the pipe will not dent. I would never run a metal pipe guard. I'd rather get a slight dent in my pipe then have to helicoil a cylinder (or worse).

I have FRP (Fredette) pipe guards for both the FMF -30 and -35 pipes. I haven't had any big "get offs", but both guards have completely protected my pipes. I don't have any dings at all underneath them. The paint will go away over time, but a good high temp flat black brings the looks right back, in fact better than the paint that Jeff uses. I highly recommend them.

I have used the moose guards since i found out about them. They have worked perfectly fine for me. They saved me from some giant dents yes they did.

I don't understand the pipe-bolt talk.

KTM's have a problem with the flange on the pipe/case junction cracking under a strong hit to the pipe. I've never seen that particular problem on a KDX though.
