how much slack is needed in the decompression lever on the xr400's?

The manual specifies 3/16"-5/16" pull as measured at the lever end, before you feel the mechanism contact the valve. This measured and adjusted with the engine at TDC on the compression stroke, just like when adjusting your valves.
