I am trying to decide which bike would be good for my son the main use would be around the farm and practice days @ the track and then may be A race or 2 would a kdx 50 be a good choice for this I've already looked at the ktm and cobra and don"t want to start him one those maybe for his second bike

PW, TTR, CRF, JR, KDX, perhaps even the KTM Mini Adventure. For racing I don't see many JR's or KDX's. PW50 has it's own class at most tracks. The CRF/XR and mini adventure are usually in the same class (I think the new TTR50 would fall into that class as well. The TTR and CRF/XR can be turned into pit bikes later, after he stops racing it.

And if you need training wheels, check out wheels4tots.com. They make a great product that is very reliable, trust me, my kids have torture tested that product to death!

I bought a KDX50 for my son/daughter in Feb. this year. It's a good bike for beginners. My son is 3 and he is already riding it with the training wheels. I'll be taking the wheels off soon as he rides a bike very well without the training wheels. It is actually a JR50 with green Kawa graphics on it. It runs great and I wouldn't hesitate to buy it again. I have the "tots" training wheels and they work great. Fact is, most of the 50cc bikes are good quality so pick a color you like and buy it.

I can't wait for a year or 2 to get him a KX65. Yep, hes a big boy at 3 and by 5, he'll need a bigger bike. I like the KX65 with a auto clutch.

We have two JR50's. While we have not had any propblems, I think that the new TTr 50 or the Honda 50 is a nicer bike.

I'm thinking of selling my two Jr's and getting a TTR50 for my 4YO.

I have not seen this, do you plan to convert it?

I saw a complete clutch in a magazine somewhere for $500. I don't remember which one but it shouldn't be to hard to find.

thanks for the help any more advice would be great also what would be the max age for a pw rider or kdx i am starting to wonder if these bikes may be on the small side for a 6 year old

Easiest way to check for fit would be to take him to the dealers and try him on the bikes. Kids seem to have an easier time learning if they can touch the ground with both feet while on the seat. You'll also want to check for knee clearance at the handlebars. I took my son off of the PW50 while he was 7. He was a little too large at the time, and beating on it real hard at the track. He is a bit small for his age. Honestly, the PW50 would probably only be good for about a year. I think that if you go 50, you would be best served by either the TTR50 or CRF/XR50. These bikes are a little bigger than the PW, have the rear brake located under the foot as it should be, and have 3 spd trannies. Though you don't have to teach a child how that works right away. They can also be easily modded as he grows. Both engines can also be enlarged down the road.

The biggest factors to consider if choosing between the TTR and CRF are:

Do you want an electric or kick starter? TTR is electric (I have heard that it a kickstart can be added), CRF is a kick only.

What kind of aftermarket support would you like? The CRF/XR's have been around forever and have the aftermarket support to prove it. Yami just released the TTR50 so, while the factory release a small arsenal of upgrades immediately, the aftermarket may be slow to jump on it.

Do you want to be just like everybody else? If so, Honda, no question. They're everywhere.

Do you want to buy new or used? Hondas are everywhere so you can probably get a used one cheap. TTRs are new, so good luck trying to find one used and cheap.

What about the coolness factor? The TTR50 just looks awesome, I wish it came out three years ago. The CRF looks just like it did when it was an XR, but you can get plastics in virtually any color, and graphics kits are everywhere as well.

Lastly, what's your favorite color?
