How would the 06 crf250r compare to a two stroke?

How does this bike compare to say an 06 cr250r? Is it worth getting instead of a 2 stroke? Also what is the difference between the crf250r and crf250x. I ride mosty trails so what one would be best for me?

No comparison between the two. Each have their positives and it really comes down to personal preference. I was a long time 2 stroke 250 rider and struggled with going to the dark side, now I love the KX250f and am glad I made the switch. But that's me and my riding preference at 43 years of age. If I had done this 5 years or 10 years ago I would have stayed on a 2 stroke because I like their qualities, but now I don't want to ride that hard.

For mostly trails, I would go X or 2 stroke. If you want to ride any MX go 250F or 2 stroke. 2 stroke or 4 stroke is really a matter of preference, one is not any better than the other.

It's a lot slower. 250 two-strokes compete against 450 four-strokes.

That all depends. If you want to keep up with 250 two-strokes, the CRF250(or 250X) is the wrong tool for the job. There are advantages and disadvantages to each. Try to get a ride on them both and see which you prefer.

The CRF250X is designed as a trail bike from the factory, the non-X is a motocross bike. The X would be a better choice for a trail bike, imo. But if you're going to ride on an MX track much, the X would not be a great choice. Another alternative(to the 250X) would be a Kawasaki KDX200. They're cheap, easy to find, and very reliable. And, because they're two-strokes, they're also cheaper and easier to maintain.
