Hi i have a 1997 kdx 220 it has boyson power reeds and an fmf fatty front pipe. the problem is i use the bike for trail riding and it doesn't make any decent amount of torque or power until you are about 3/4 to full throttle and makes very little low end torque or power which is a pain as when i'm trail riding. which is mostly uphills and tight twisty stuff. Has any body got any ideas on changing the power reeds if so wot should i put in there. any ideas please help.

Something is wrong with your bike. a 220 makes tons of torque... have you jetted the bike?

Nah i have not touched jets in the carb but guy that had it before may have. What are the the standard jet numbers in the carb meant to be and i will check.

if the power reed valve is buggeredcould this cause the problem it just dosen't seem to have much go down low, but when u get up high in the rev on the throttle it goes like a bat out of hell

Your carb may have been changed to a 35mm instead of the 33mm that came on it. This is a popular mod and you will lose some bottom end if this has been done. Check the ID of the carb throat facing the motor.
I just don't think it's the reeds causing the issue. Rich jetting i.e lack of air will cause what your talking about. Have you played with the air screw at all?

Nah i have changed nothing on the carb it is just as i brought the bike, I will take carb off tonite and measure carb throat size and aslo find out what jets it has in the carb
as most of the riding i do is from 0 - 3000 feet.

Hi i took carb off tonite it is the 33mm , the carb had jets with the numbers #142 & #40 on them as far as i could tell the air screw had not been played with.
thanks

To me, being new to the KDX, but reading a bunch, the jetting looks okay. Ours is at 145 and 42 (the way it was bought 3 weeks ago) and the 42 seems to be too fat. When it really gets warm it hardly idles and never needs the choke. I would check a couple of things. One, what is the float level like? Is is dripping fuel from the overflow and does it load up after awhile at idle? Two, check the compression. I don't recall you saying if it was good or not. If te compression is low, it will give the problem you are seeing. If the reeds are worn, it could be causing the problem too.... losing compresssion back through the carb. Good Luck.
This past weekend was our first ride with our KDX220 for my 15 year old and I was really impressed with the torque it had. It was almost 4 stroke like when grunting through the tight stuff and up hills. Once I get the pilot right, I really expect it to get good!

How is first and second gear? power wise that is.

Chances are your power valve is stuck in the OPEN or full speed position. I would be willing to bet large sums of money on it. You can check it very easily. Take the little cover off that is on the right side of the cylinder that covers the power valve rod and gear. Take the little toothed lever off but remeber this THE NUT IS LEFT HAND THREADS!!! be careful or you can do hundreds of dollars worth of damage in very short order. when the little arm is off, you should be able to turn the little gear sticking out easily by hand. If not, your valve is stuck.
A KDX 220 should have enough low end torgue to throw you off the back of the bike with a blip of the throttle in first gear, and should pull with no problem from a walking speed even in 3rd or 4th gear.

Hi guys i found out today that the standard jets are #145 & #42. a guy i know had a look at float levels last nite and thay where a mile out it was around 23mm he brought it down to about 16mm as that is where it is set on his YZ250. the buike had new piston & rings fittted just before i brought bike. It goes real when in first and second if you blip the throttle open it will lift the front wheel of the ground, but when it comes to hill climbs it just seems to run out of power. The power valve was stuck when i first got bike and had the shop look at it and fix it.

Port timing on the KDX is very important also. That is documented in your manual.

with the jets #142 & #40 would the air screw need to be opened up a little bit more bit more than standard could this cause the problem if thay have changed that but not changed the air screw
Posted by: HSK1---------------------
??? how can you check if that is rite
Posted by: lepper---------------------
All you have to do is pull your pipe and use your fingers to feel the barrels position, with the left KIPS cover off and the nut and claw off the actuator (CAREFUL: Left Hand Threads!) turn the actuator open and closed.
Like I said...a manual can explain it better....

ah thanks i will check that out
Posted by: lepper---------------------
But... if it's wrong... you will have to pull the head to re-index them.

could the jetting be the problem at idle as when the bike is cold and you go to ride off the bike feals like it is starving and very hesitatant to ride
but once it's warm it that goes away and bike becomes nice to ride
Posted by: HSK1---------------------
I think that was part of wot thay fixed at the shop he said something was out of timing and he fixed it all and got it rite
Posted by: lepper---------------------
KDX's take a long time to warm up... at least 10 minutes in my experience.
Posted by: HSK1---------------------
Thanks for that

No problem!
