Hey my 91 kdx 200 just stoped starting randomly, I am still getting spark and gas to the carberurator. Could there be a problem with like the contact points or some starter coil if there is such a thing? anybody have any expirence in this area or any ideas? thanks

The 91 has electronic ignition which is usually trouble free. I would check the pilot jet first to make sure it is clear. Only thing these bikes need to start is good gas, hot spark, clean air, and enough compression. If you are sure on the first three then it may be time to freshen up the top end. You should check compression.

If you are someplace cold, and the bike has been sitting in a "sub 32*F" location take the carb off and check to see if there is a chunk of ice in the bottom of the bowl.

We just had this problem with a '91 KDX250. It had a block of ice in the bowl for some reason. We carefully melted it removed it and dried it off with a hairdryer and voila! Started right up.

Clean fuel, compression, air and spark... like the above post said...

Its bound to be electrical. Twice I have been told how trouble free the ignition systems are on bikes and how they rarely clap out, and twice I have pulled every nut off the bike looking for a problem that wasn’t there. Both times it was the ignition coils on the stator plate. One set looked factory perfect and still didn’t function properly, the other looked like crap. Id start here, no actually start with a fresh plug…that could help too.

I couldn’t believe how easily my bike started once I replaced the coils, and how much faster it went too. Also there is no real way of testing these coils, you will find a bunch of resistances you can check but its all crap really. Your best bet is to find a mate who has a KDX too that goes hard, and swap stator plates with him. You will need a flywheel puller, they don’t cost much.

When my dx gives me a little troble I lay it on its side till the gas flows out of the the over flow tubes and then I pick it back up and it usually starts within the first few kicks. (good fuel) (good compression) and ( good spark) I also like to run my bike out of fuel when I am done riding by shuting off the petcock and let it run till it dies this helps from getting seporated fuel and oil in the main jet especially when its cold.
Happy trails Dave

Back to DaveRS conditions above, it has been my experience that condensate and other types of water that may get into the fuel accumulates in the bottom of the float bowl on the carb. When the water gets deep enough it will keep you from starting though seldom will stop you from running. If it stops you from running it will not be in a good place--Don't ask me how I know, as I learned from Murphy. A good practice is to remove the plug in the bottom of the float bowl and drain the whole thing and turn on the gas and rinse it out with the plug removed.. From experience I do this a couple of times per year unless of course I have the carb out changing jets, etc. Cheers John
