Which bike

In searching for a bike I found a cheap ($800) '98 RM125 from a buddy who just wants to get rid of it. I am also looking at the '06 KLX 300r. My question is that at 6'2" 250pds and not being very mechanically inclined I am not sure what is right for me. I know 2 strokes require a lot of maintiance which I don't want and I don't know how a 125 would carry my weight. I guess what I am trying to ask is to just play around (not race or any thing) with is the 125 too small? I might want to jump or something, but mostly ride trails. For the cheap price sound I go with the RM125? $4,900 or $800 that is the question? LOL. TY

$800 for a 98 RM 125, either you guys are really good friends and he really, really wants to get rid of it or it is a lemon. Realistically you could get about $1500-$1900 for a 98 RM 125 that is in good/great condition. I would be wary about a deal that good unless you know the guy well. As far as your size and riding preferences go I would recommend getting a 200cc or larger 2T or a 400cc or larger 4T. Also it sounds like you are leaning towards more play riding and trailriding and if that is the case I would say focus towards a trail bike rather than a MX bike. You can still jump a trail bike plenty good on the small stuff, I jump my KDX all the time. You just arent going to want to attempt skying a 70 footer on it, but it doesnt sound like that is your goal anyway. Id say if you have the money go for the KLX you wont regret having a new bike and for your size it will suit you better than a RM 125, although I think even a 400cc 4T would be better for you. Take a look around at the different brands of trailbikes there are a lot of options out there.

Thanks for the quick response. As for the price we are in the Coast Guard together, he is moving and not taking it with him. It's in good shape. As for the KLX 300r 4 stroke, that is the only bike I found in my price range. Honda and Yamaha want like $6,500. Do you think I will get board with the 300cc? It does have 26hp and the Honda has only 29hp which is only 3hp more. Do you think it's worth the $1500 more? Basiclly can I pop a wheelie and take some jumps with a 300? I am not doing anything crazy. I just don't want to spend $4,900 and get bored with too small of a bike, but I also don't want to spend too much if I don't need it. I will also check out the KDX. I sound retarded , but I don't want to make a big money mistake. Also what have you heard about the KLX's? Good bikes? Thanks again for the response.

I saw that KDX is a 2 stroke. How much maintinace do you put in to that and is is possible to make that off highway street legal?

Posted by: the trail rider---------------------

pretty low maintenance, new tranny fluid every few rides(days) and clean airfilter every few rides(if dirty) but other than a top end every 5 or so years it is perfect. i think a xr 400 would carry your weight well, lots of power for your size.

I got a 2002 RM 125 in good condition for $1500 back in May 2005. All I had to replace was a rear wheel bearing and a countershaft seal. There are good deals out there, but I shopped for about two months.

Posted by: apb---------------------

You could buy the 125 and ride it for a couple months, then sell it for a profit and get something bigger after you've gotten a better idea which direction you want to go. You probably won't have any trouble getting 1500 or 1600 for the RM..

Posted by: rodH---------------------

Buy the RM125, that is a smokin deal, if you feel like you need more power later, sell it in a few years, make and make a few hundred bucks in the process. If you don't want to buy it and your buddy lives in Calif, let me know, I will go buy it.

Posted by: lovin'ridin'---------------------

Good call APB and RodH. I had kind of started thinking that myself. It's just tough to pass up such a great deal. I think I will be doing it. Like you said if it's too small I sell it. It just suck, because I live north of Detroit and he is in Chicago (and I don't have a truck LOL). Thanks for eveyone's input I think I'll go with the RM for now then move up later. By the way anyone in the Detroit area know where to ride?

I am not saying that you cant find a good deal, all I was getting at is if you get a deal that seems too good to be true then it is worth looking into it a little bit more. Especially when you are talking about buying a used dirt bike. Sounds like you got a good deal as well rob, good for you. It looks like you may have done some major engine work to it as well though considering it is a 144 now

lovin' ridin' in your case it looks like you are good friends with the guy selling the bike and since he has a very legitimate reason for wanting to get rid of it in a short amount time (transfer season is coming up), I would say it is a safe situation for you and just a hell of a deal, go for it. As I said, right now you can sell a 98 RM 125 in Good/Excellent condition for $1500-1900 depending on aftermarkets parts and such. So if you get the 125 and feel that it is not quite enough bike for you due to your size, you can turn around and sell it in a year and maybe even make some money.

Posted by: lovin'ridin'---------------------

That is pretty much what I have decided to do. I am no proffesional so it should be fine. If after a year I only get $800 bucks then I just rode a bike for a year for free

Posted by: JST122---------------------

Very true, I think you are making a good decision. Because the price is as great as it is, you really cant go wrong and it leaves you with a lot of options later if you find you would like something different. Initially when I look at your size I would not recommend a 125 and that is why I said shoot for a 200cc 2 stroke or a 400cc 4 stroke (or larger). But in your particular situation in makes perfect sense right now because the deal is right and you can get some seat time on a bike to help you make a decision on what you think you really need to suit your preferences. Heck, you may just love the RM 125 and not desire anything bigger. Goodluck with everything and enjoy the riding.

Thanks for the help everyone. I found out more info on the bike and it is a 1998 KX 125 for $1,000 (because he is shipping from Chicago to Detroit), but I don't think it makes a difference. I am pretty set on the purchase. Now the only thing to check out is laws in Kodiak, Alaska on 2 strokes. I can't find any info and I am moving there in the summer. One more thing. Have any of ya'll heard of SUNL motorcycles? What do you know about them? I am looking at getting a trail bike from them so I will have 2 bikes. One trail and one MX. This is a 2005 4 stoke 200cc enduro never ridden for $1,199. Makes me a little nervious being so cheap. Do ya'll know where to get parts? Thanks for all the help, and if you have any info on riding in Kodiak or know where to find that info let me know. TY

Posted by: the trail rider---------------------

if you are moving to alaska. you will not want any 125. 0 low end. need a kdx or a ktm exc or a older xr 4 stroke.

Posted by: lovin'ridin'---------------------

Have you been there? And thanks for the info I am having trouble desiding what to buy. I am stressed out. LOL

I knew what you were getting at - it does pay to be careful - I drove two and a half hours to Columbus to look at one bike that sounded like a good deal - and it was obviously a piece of crap - the guy misrepresented it.

On the bike I bought, it was really easy to tell my bike was in good shape even though I had never met the guy before.

He was two hours away and when I called about the bike he told me LOTS of things about it. . . such as rear wheel bearing going bad, small crack in right side panel, new chain and sprocket, new tires, Bills Pipe and Silencer, etc . . .

When I got there, the bike was exactly what he said. I was pleased to find that he was a racer and had two boys who raced (100s of trophies) thus I was pretty sure he took care of the motors. He was selling the bike to buy another for his fast son and needed the cash quickly for the new season.

Incidentally, he also told me things I couldn't verify easily, such as a Hinson clutch and a new top end. Both turned out to be true - which was really cool!! Geez - betweetn the Bills pipe and the Hinson clutch thats like $700.00 in parts . . .

And yes, I'm loving the E.G. 144! Only rode it a couple times so far.

Posted by: JST122---------------------

Rob goodluck at the races with it, I assume you do race it. I would be interested to see how a 144 compares to a 250F, especially in a race situation. I imagine we will see more and more 144's out at the track now that the AMA has approved the rule. You cant beat the light, nimble feeling of a 125 two stroke and with the added horsepower from the additional bore, I bet it is great.

Posted by: MXrider27---------------------

sounds good, but if any chance, you decide you don't want it, let me know man haha..i'll drop 800 in a heart beat....great deal...great friend....
