No Excuse For Not Exercising

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

For many people in today’s busy world it’s quite easy to come up with an excuse for not being in shape and exercising regularly. Some of the more common ones are “I’m too busy”, “There aren’t enough hours in a day”, and “I’m so tired after work and taking care of the kids all day”. However most of these are just that, excuses. Unless your doctor has informed you that you should not exercise, some form of activity or physical fitness should be a priority on everyone’s daily routine. The key is realizing that your health is an important part of your life, and should be made a priority.

The best way to keep is shape is to be involved in some sort of physical activity on a regular basis (at least 3 times a week). If you can find a sports activity like swimming, tennis, racquetball, basketball, baseball, softball, running, or karate that you enjoy this is just as effective as a regular exercise routine. If it’s something you enjoy chances are you won’t think of it as drudgery and will look forward to doing it.

For those of us who don’t participate in some form of sports on a regular basis we are going to have to come up with regular exercise program. One of the most successful methods is to get up half an hour earlier in the morning and exercise. If you really like your sleep this may be hard, but if you exercise at night it’s much easier to say “I’m too tired today” and skip it. If you have kids around the house you are also setting a great example about how important taking care of your health and your body really is.

The first option to consider is choosing a gym. While a gym can be expensive you will have access to a wide variety of equipment and machines that you could never afford or fit into your house. You will also have access to health professionals like personal trainers.

If a health club is too expensive or doesn’t fit your lifestyle consider a home gym. You can usually purchase a set of free weights, exercise bench and floor mat for under $200. If you like exercise machines such as stair climbers or stationary bikes keep in mind some of these can be expensive. Watch for garage sales where you can pick up second hand units at a discount.

Some people prefer the guidance that an exercise tape can give you. While these are good choices if you are like most people, you’ll get tired doing the same routine after a few weeks. Consider choosing a series of tapes, borrowing some from the library, or trading them with a friend. With the expansion of fitness programs on cable TV you also have access to a wide variety of programs. If the instructor you like isn’t on when you exercise consider using your VCR or Tivo to time shift your viewing.

Once you start exercising regularly make sure you vary your routine and change it from time to time. This not only keeps you from getting bored but it keeps your body from getting used to the exercises. Most fitness experts recommend changing your routine every 6-8 weeks. As with any fitness program make sure to check with your doctor before beginning an exercise program.

Okie,

I was looking for the "Boot Camp" forums, as I'm in need of a little weight loss. Is there anyway to gain access to the old data? I'd like to repeat what I did last time because it worked.

I just bought a MTB, and that is great exercise!
I am trying to focus my exercise strategy on aerobic conditioning as opposed to lots of weight lifting. Muscular endurance is what I want, not explosive short term strength.

I would to find a rider's workout plan though that incorporates the elements I listed above....

Anyone have any programs or links they'd like to share?

Try Billy Blanks Tae Bo - I just started on this last night, as my winter workout. The Basic Training DVD is 55 minutes long and incorporates all major muscle groups. It's a great cardiovascular workout as well as conditioning. I was sweating bullets by the time I got done with it last night, and I'm sore today but it feels great!

And if you do try that - get the resistance bands that go along with the DVD - you can do the workout without them, but it's much more effective with them.

Tae Bo, while overly commericalized and copied, is awesome. It also helps a LOT with balance (yes, you need to train balance to improve it) and flexibility.

BTW, I need to read my own post in this thread!

Indeed Okie - I learned very quickly that balance is very imporatnt in Tae Bo (I almost fell down numerous times hehehe) and that I'm not quite as flexible as I'd like to be.

I've begun doing situps, leg raises, and stretching in the morning before showering. After three weeks of this 5-10minute a day routine my back hurts less when I get up in the AM.

I don't have a problem starting to excercise, I just lose motivation after a couple of weeks. Why can't I get bored of crackers and chocolate with the same zeal?

That should be great motiviation in and of itself - I always love the way I feel after exercising - I end up with so much more energy.

my phys ed teacher today said that there are more obese people in the world now, than starving people. which really made me think, because when you put in to perspective, the population of say, Nigeria, and South Africa, etc etc. Makes you really think.

2 nights a week of SPIN Aerobics for the last 3 years has worked wonders.. This past month my gym offered a new class called "Circuit training" It was pretty intense, worked on warming up, cardio, muscle tone and some balance stuff (standing on this half ball thing) Every so often i will jog on a tread mill, but most of all i like the Spin class.. Bad part is i take an evening class (would rather sleep in) and it can be kinda tough going too sleep when your heart rate is above normal

Circuit training? I think we've done that in phys ed class, not really sure if your circuit training is the same as mine. We would run 2 laps around a gym, and do a certain excercise in the middle of the gym, while our partner ran their 2 laps around the gym. There were 4 different exercises. Is that what you do?

Posted by: rickyd---------------------

Yes, basically the same.. We started of doing some squats, then lunges. Then went to different "Stations" doing various exercises for 1 minute then move to the next "station". After you do all 5, we started going through the sqaures (kinda like running through tires in football practice) do that for about 6-8 minutes, the we ran back and forth (half of that time i ran backwards) in the classroom.. Then we went back to the stations, did a round of those then broke out the bouncce ball thing that you stand on.. It was good stuff, i wish my gym would offer it full time.

awesome. you could probably make your own circuit training. if there's a local track..like a highschool or something. I think basic circuit training was 2 laps, and the 15 or so reps of whatever excercise. like 2laps, then 15 pushups, 2 laps, then 15 crunches, and so on. it gets easier and you can add more reps. it's really good on the body, for me anyway.
