Hey,
sorry for another one of these threads, but I am looking to get a used bike and don't know wheather I should get a 2 stroke or 4 stroke and which size. I won't race, but mostly just trail ridding. For what I am going to do, is a 2 or 4 stroke better and which size do you think. I want a little room for growth, but I'll probly gain 15lbs at most.

Thanks
Ethan

4T is definitely the way for you. TTR125, 230, or equivalent from the others. I am 5'8" and 200lb and I tip toe a full size MX bike. You don't carry enough weight ot compress the suspension and would be in a world of hurt trying to put your foot down on the wrong side of a slope while out on the trail.

i would get a 230 crf or ttr. there wont be a whole lot of power but to get a big bike it might be a lil too much for you. but you can always get aftermarket parts for the 230 to make it faster.

I think I might want a 2 stroke because I could work on them easier and they are cheaper to maintain. Problem is, they seem to be more expensive up front than a four stroke. I don't have a great budget either.

Get a 4 stroke. A CRF150F or a CR230F. If you want a 2 strake then get a CR125.

I have found just the opposite to be true. It seems that the 4 stroke bikes are more expensive. That is why I bought two 2 stroke bikes.

As far as MX bikes go, 4t is more expensive all around. But comparing trail thumpers such as the ttr to MX smokers, the trail bike will be less expensive and typically require far less maintenance.

Used bike just for trail ridding your about my size if I was on limited funds and I wanted something that I could grow with. Here let me show this KDX 200/220 yea it's a two stroke but hey it's light and easy to work on and it's all ready better than those ttr's xr's. Maybe if your search hard enough you might be able to find an KTM 200 EXC around the 2500 range. Either one of those two bikes would be more then enough with all kinds of room to go into them with. They might require compared to a ttr xr alittle more frequent top end changes but you can get like 80 hrs on a top end of a 2 stroke just doing easy trail ridding. Plus when you have to replace the parts they are generally cheaper in cost.

I doubt anyone on here could dispute that other wise if you get an XR crf ttr you'll probably get sick of it after 9 months or a year. The 200's I suggested above should give you many years of enjoyment. I watch a neighbor of mine do something similar got an XR 250 first bike is 20 some years had it for about a year took a ride on a kdx bought a new kdx right away sold the XR.

Hey I was reading around the forums, and was wondering if you guys think a kx100 would do well for me. I won't be racing, just trail riding and riding in fields etc. I won't get much taller. Remember i'm 5"6 and 120lbs. I want the two stroke for maintenance and maintence costs. Is this reasonable?

Thanks
Ethan

Either a KDX or a KTM EXC 2-stroke.

get a crf or ttr 230 but a fairly new one. if you plan on going to something like TNT, get a kx 125.

SInce you are devoted to the smoker because you have heard that it is easier and cheaper to maintain, yes, a KX100 would fit and work. But remember that it IS a racing machine with a racing motor. The powerband will come in violently as the revs increase. If you are an inexperienced rider, it will probably hurt a little. I have a friend that weighs in at a bit over 200 and looped a KX65 when it hit. Also, the race bike require frequent maintenance. The trail bikes, TTR, KLX, CRF, are very reliable, so they will seldom need more than an oil change, filter cleaning, and some chain and cable lube. This will equate to lower maintenance costs overall. They also have a smoother power curve which will make it easier to start on uphills, and negotiate more complex low speed stuff. A TTR230 will be cheaper and easier to ride than a KX100.

I'm 5' 6 1/2" at 140 lbs and have a CRF230. I wanted a bike for trails and it's perfect. I heard they were cheaper to maintain than a 2 stroke racing bike.

A small bore two stroke mxer will cost you far more on matinance than a four stroke trail bike, as the top end on the mxer will need to be changed 50 times before youll ever have to dissasemble a well cared for crf 230.

jonny.....

I think you should definately get a kx100, they size right between a 85 and a 125, my friend has a kx100 and it rips... itd be perfect for you

Sounds like a KX-100 would fit your needs. I just recently drove one and was very impressed. Bought it for my wife, however, I'm looking forward to driving too. By the way, it pulled my 180lb arse around no problem.

The KX100 is what I would get. You do not have to spend a ton to get one and I have not had any trouble with mine. I have a KX250 and a KX100 and really enjoy the little bike as much as the big one. The bike is strong for its size but should not be too much. I am 5'10, 215lbs and the kx100 has plenty of power for trail riding. Get the KX100!!!

I agree with the KDX 200/220 suggestion. It's good fit for a guy your size and for trail riding. I would also suggest you consider a KX or RM 125. The 125 motors will be a bit "snappier" than the KDX but if you figure to grow your skills, they will be much more capable down the road when you are riding harder and going faster. The 125's are also lighter than the KDX. An outfit called "Koubalink" makes lowering links for the KX and RM that lower the seat height approx. 1 3/4 inches. That would bring the 125's (or the KDX for that matter) down to a better height for trail riding at your 5'6" frame. Yamaha also makes an excellent 125 but you can't get a lowering link for them. I'd stay away from the Honda. They are excellent bikes but are targeted more for the track than the trail IMO.
If your intention is to just putt around on the trails and sightsee, the TTR's and CRF's are a fine choice. If you intend to ride a bit more seriously, those bikes will be woefully insufficient for you as you start to build your skills and go faster. The suspension (and motors) on those models is designed for slow speed beginners and won't do the job for you if you plan to progress into faster speeds or more challenging terrain.

After a couple hours of instruction with the bike on a stand, I threw my 5' 5", 120lb, 11 year old son on a KX100 (first time he had ever ridden), put it in 2nd gear for him and gave them a push.
4 months later he is chasing me around the big MX tracks. He’s doing better than I could have dreamed, I love my new riding buddy.

Make no mistake, the KX/RM100 are really big bikes for a beginner, and some instruction must be given before an outing, even before every outing. These things are not TTR’s, they will eat any TTR125 anyplace. When the ride is anything rougher than a cottage road the 100’s would probably embarrass a TTR225.

KX/RM100’s (even the KTM105) are wonderful machines that have great powerbands for beginner (with respect) and plenty powerful enough to drag my 220lb and growing backside around without complaining too much, or give a beginner a real bike after a brief learning curve.

I installed a set of Protapers and adapter raisers on the KX midway through the season. It made a big difference and would recommend a taller/wider set for any 100 owner.

Maintenance is super easy. Get an extra air filter or two and change them often. Clean air is critical.
Change the oil often (these are no different than a 4 stroke).

Buy the Factory manual, top ends are super easy and not expensive. They are not free either, but a small price to pay for performance and suspension that isn’t available in a 4 stroke in this category.
