Can this bike handle an MX track? Looks pretty sweet with perimeter frame and all. I'm not looking to race but am wanting to learn to ride an MX track. I'm guessing it might be lower maintenance than say a KX125.

Thanks,
John

The problem with any enduro bike in MX is weight - that along with the fact that you cant race a 200 in 125 class and you'll be very underpowered in 250 class.

A KDX 200 is probably 25 lbs heavier than a 125 and doesn't have much more power, if any. Thus, not the best choice. I suppose the suspension could handle the jumps, but it wouldn't be very competitive in the classes you can run it in.

If you want to race a lot of MX, get an MX bike. If you just want to dabble in MX, then the KDX might work. I wouldn't do it tho.

I have a 2001 kdx200 that I play on a nearby practice track with. It has a few whoops, a tabletop, and a few doubles. I am just getting back into riding, so I haven't even been able to do one of the doubles yet. With that said, I think the kdx200 is a great bike to "play" on an MX track with, and perfect for riding woods if you get tired of MX. You may have to beef up the suspension depending on your weight and how hard you ride for the MX track. Remember, "play" is the key word here, if you want to get big air or really rip up the track, you might consider an all out MXer. Hope this little input helps.

guess there is no way around a real MX bike for an MX track....

I don't currently plan on racing but I do want to be able to rip it up a bit. I figure if my 7 year old is willing to step up to the plate and learn to race on a little Cobra the least I can do is share the experience with him. Can't let the little guy show me up until he's at least 10.....

Thanks for the input. I'm leaning towards a CRF250R as it sounds like it might be worth the extra cash due to the forgiveness it offers to rookies like me.

Later,
John

Go the KDX forum and do a search on racing a KDX in MX. Judge for yourself if the more then hundred discussions offered aid in your decision making process.

Just be prepared to take good care of the motor - the 250f's need a significant amount of maintenance. If you blow one it will be very expensive to fix.

From what I've read here, the YZ250f is the most reliable of the 250f's thus far, but you can run the searches yourself . . .

Well, I have a '96 KDX 200 and an '01/03 KX125 so I'd say I'm in good shape to comment on this. I ride 75% track because it's more convenient, but 25% "off-road" which includes jeep trails, desert, etc. Very little to no tight woods. When I ride the KDX on the track, I'm really just practicing for off-road. When I ride the KX on the track, I'm riding on the track.

My KDX has a Desert pipe, opened air box, modified suspension. The KX is pretty trick- suspension, DFII, ProCircuit stuff, etc. You might be surprised at how much power a good KDX200 can lay down. I've ridden both bikes on the same day against a friend on a 250F (acting like a pace vehicle). On a twisty track with lots of turns and fewer straights, the KDX pulls harder off the bottom and will exit turns much quicker. The power spread is longer and it's easier to wheelie over stuff- this is VERY handy off-road. The KX is better for jumping, of course, but the KDX does surprisingly well. The KX gives me arm-pump faster and I have to be in better shape to ride it. From turn to turn, the KX revs faster and gets there a little quicker, but again, the KDX can pull out of the corner faster. In a long race like a 2-hr hare scramble, I ride the KDX. For play riding in unknown conditions, I ride the KDX. For riding in the woods, I ride the KDX. For riding on a nicely prepped MX track with good traction, I ride the KX.

If I could only keep one....I wouldn't. I'd sell them both and woodsify a 250 MX'er!

Hey jmcool,
You sound just like my brother...in fact... where do you live? just kidding....He MX'd and Played on his KDX while his son raced the Cobra...He worked on the Cobra every frickin' week and was soooo glad for the dependability of the KDX, otherwise he couldn't afford the time/$ to ride at all!

He loved to hear other guys on brand new CRF 450's say how mad they were to follow his damn tail light into turn one, especially after spending $6,800.!!! (it's 90% rider, bro)

You can find 2004 KDX 200 Brand New leftover for $ 3350. here in Ohio...(I now have two ('96 & '99)with moderate use with all popular mods. they are worth about $1,800. to $2,000. and you cannot beat the smile per dollar. They are as reliable as a paperweight, also. Find someone nearby and ride one.
