Went to the Yamaha shop today

Maybe I'm a little late in saying this since it's been out for a while but I had the chance to look at the new 06' YZF450 today and let me tell ya...It is one of the best looking bikes I've ever seen...The design is incredible...Everything is high quality easy to access and it just flows...It's not big and bulky and just has the cleanest lines of any bike I've seen...By contrast the other bikes just look too busy by comparison...

I think Yamaha's decision to not go with the perimeter frame was an excellent choice...

Posted by: Zoomer---------------------

I made the mistake of going there 2 weeks ago, look at my sig line and you'll understand

I can not wait to try it out, hope the mags are 1/2 right.

Posted by: Jaybird---------------------

Yeah..but a yellow YZ?

Posted by: dales298---------------------

Just brought a 40th edition raptor 700 home and man does it glow!
The bigger they are the better I like em.

Have you evert wondered what would happen if there was fuel in the right side of the tank, but the pick-up on the left side was left uncovered. Any YZ owners interested in putting a quarter gallon of gas in their bike, leaning it to the right, letting it idle on the stand until it dies, then telling us how much fuel is still in the tank. Sure it looks good, but I have a problem with fuel being provided on the splash principle. Don't get me wrong, I love the blue, but the closer I look, the less desireable their dirty bikes are. I still have dreams about having a Road Star Warrior for the street.

Some of us (Zoomer and I) have been faithful to the yellow. Hell, I remember when they were yellow the first time!

Barely. :D

Posted by: Halfast816---------------------

I had one of those screaming yellow zonkers I used to race against Mike(#95) if I remember correctly. I am still having trouble walking out of my friend's Yamaha shop (Glen Curtis motorsports) without buying his anniversry edition 450. Hope I don't get in trouble for putting the shop name on here. I owe him , cuz he lets me use the tire machine

Posted by: zcookie49---------------------

I got the 50th special 450f and had a chance to ride it at the track this past Saturday. I am impartial to Yamahas but let me tell you, I cant even describe the smile on my face. It reminded me of when I first rode the yz250f back in 2001.
This might sound gay, but, its a dream ride for me. I slid my forks down to the 1st etched line and had no problems at all steering. I was breaking it in and they changed the track around somewhat, but it was soaking up landings easily, I love the powerband, it feels as light or lighter than my 250f. I shed good weight of my 250f too. Starts easy and the yellow is bad ass IMO. I felt super confident on the bike. I let this guy who loves Hondas ride it and he was amazed with the "centralazing of the mass low". He commented that it was better than his bike, he's coming off a 04 crf450, dont know about the 06's.
I was told at the shop that the yellow plastic isnt available till March, oem or aftermarket. I went ahead and dressed it up in blue and put the yellow away for now. The lack of blue frame and tank help out with the visuals. I agree that the "fit/finish" is top notch and close, if not there with Honda, as is their reliability. My 250f seemed to get noticed while out, but next to the aluminum 450, it looks sooo clapped out with the rubbed out frame, blue stressed plastic.
.
I have noticed that the bike uses the same air filter and cage, as well as the oil filter. I have some fairly new twinairs and a Scotts stainless oil filter. Swapped from the 250f over.
I can't stress how smooth this motor is. It seems to roll on so smooth but can hit very hard, like its there when you want to tap into it. To me, it's been worth the wait. I almost swapped over to a Honda CRF in 2004-05, but held out for the rumors of the AFyami. I'm extremely satisfied.
... oh yeah, about the mags reviews. After riding the bike myself, I would have to agree with MXA's review spot on, not that it would be hard to guess!

Posted by: Zoomer---------------------

Jay, cant stay away from a good thing

jamir, I remember when they where Silver, before they where Yellow, before they where blue, Before they where yellow again.,

Fru Daddy, I never, ever let my bikes get that low on gas when racing or just riding.

816, you still around?? come on out to Azzie this summer,

zcookie, Now your pissin me off, Im picking mine up sat, but with snow on the ground, looks like cooperland march 26 week will be the first time to ride it. Picked up M/C action at the airport this am and redd it on the way to Seattle today.

They rant and rave about it flat out. Cant wait. At least I will be able to play with it this week end. Can't get the yellow plastic yet?? Dealer is suppose to be putting new plastic on with his decals, and number plates by friday. Putting the originals on the shelf, like you..

Man Im actually pumped up for this season

Bring in on jay!!!1

hmmm even more reason to try and get to CL in March eric really wants to try one out and then try to find a yz250 to compare with. Eric mentioned when we were there last week that he saw your name on a bike
and I don't think Zoomer knows YZs are not supposed to be yellow

Posted by: Zoomer---------------------

come on Dave, what are they going to do, fire ya!??

Just me and the kids. wife staying home to take care of the horse,...oh yea, the mule to!

............they make them in other colors then yellow!??????

My first bike was a silver Yamaha. It was an enduro 70 though. Or something like that. It was many moons and beers ago. We painted it red. Go figure.

so she really does ride your ass and probably whip it to

Posted by: dales298---------------------

My first bike was a Yamaha at2-mx, it was orange, that was before there was such a thing as a yz.

Posted by: zcookie49---------------------

yeah Zoomer, some people said I was stupid to spend the extra money for the special edition only to take the yellow off. The model # on my bill of sale actually says "YZ450FVSP" . So you might be able to get more for it down the road when selling if you have all the originals in brand new shape.
.....I'm gonna hang it up in the garage in the plastic for now.....
.
I didnt think I would be able to ride it till march here either, Maryland. Usually it is snowing here, last Sat we had an amazing day of 55 degrees and all sun. I dont think you will be disappointed with the bike at all Zoomer.

Posted by: Zoomer---------------------

Called my dealer today, and he confirmed that he can't get the plastic for awhile, Well , we have a month or two before we can ride it so, maybe something will pop by then.

Gona miss the e start, although the yammie always started pretty good even after stalling it.

enjoy

Mike

Posted by: Jaybird---------------------

The yammy starts even better now that it has a decompression cam.

But that dang yellow stuff HAD TO GO! Everyone knows yammy thumpers look much better in WHITE!

LOL..... (they are much faster too!)

For us old guys, that's what color a Yamaha is supposed to be. Not red/white, not purple, not blue, YELLOW. Old school.

Posted by: nephron---------------------

Zoomer, I did the same thing. I had gone to Dodge City (ever hear the term 'GTFOO Dodge!'?) to eat a steak. Made the mistake of purposefully drooling over an 06 Hurricane 250F, ....stood there....stood there....and decided to go home and buy local (Garden City). Yamaha dealer didn't have one (not even a blue one), so I ended up getting an 06 KX250F. Weird how that 'ball' gets rollin'.......

Posted by: Zoomer---------------------

Heck Doc, my dealer would of sent you one, he had two 250f (yellow) on the floor.

Now I sit in my garage and druel!! I buy a bike and it starts getting colder, go figure

Posted by: john3_16---------------------

They had 2 yellow ones at the shop I went to in the DFW area...At least if you have a blue one you can always pick up some yellow replacement plastic...Both the blue and yellow look very nice but the yellow really looks good...Plus the yellow should stay new looking.

All the mags are talking about a front end push as being the only flaw..I read where Dr.D makes a radiator lowering kit (lowers radiators 1 inch) that makes it turn better than the Honda for under $50...

Posted by: oldguy---------------------

Yeah Mike I almost had them convinced I was supposed to pick it up for you on Friday. We stopped in and Eric left a big puddle of drool by the 450s. He is really itching to get one soon.
BTW did you notice they don't have any blue thumpers in the shop but at least 3 of each 250fs and 450s

Posted by: Zoomer---------------------

I don't know what to think about that. The Delifield dealer is telling everyone that there is no way he (Rockriver) is getting more then one bike, (BTW his 50 Anv Models are selling for full list,..both of them ...at Delifield) yet I have one in the garage, and there was 3 or 4 there yet, so I guess Mike does have some pull! He did say a dealer he was talking with does not sell dirt much and had his allotment sent to rockriver.

Tell Eric not to sit on it, feeeeels very light (specially after the 525)

John 3: Most of the mags said that sliding the legs up 10 MM made worlds of differance, like to see this radiator kit though!

Posted by: oldguy---------------------

Mike does a lot of horse trading with his ATV alotment. Several dealers don't sell MX bikes but can't keep atvs on thier floor. When we needed a 250f quick a couple seasons ago he traded an ATV to a guy in Indiana that had a couple on the floor but needed ATVs bad

Posted by: Zoomer---------------------

Out with the old, in with the new, OOPS< thats right Jaybird has the old one, Hey Jay, white plastic makes it 6,9% slower and 3# heavier!!

Eric,....eat your heart out.

Posted by: biglou---------------------

That is so badass!

Posted by: zcookie49---------------------

Yeah Zoomer, I could be wrong, but from your pix it looks like your forks aren't slid up to the first etched line on the fork tube. Mine wasn't, I slid them up before my first ride and had no problems. Then again I was breaking it in and taking it somewhat easy on her. Didnt feel like crashing her up on the first ride. The MXA article said to get handlebar risers that were 10mm taller than the current OEMs. Pro taper sells them for $60, 35mm, 45mm, 55mm heights. I haven't been able to measure the current height of the OEMS, thinking they are 35mm though. I dont own a tool that measures in mm's. If anyone can figure it out, I would love to know the stock height.
.
Man, your old bike looks pretty good too. Never saw one with the frame painted yellow.
.
I have taken off my Alum throttle tube and Scotts stainless oil filter from my 01 250F, they are the same on the 06 450F. I installed an hour meter and am awaiting Works connection to put out their skid plate (with hole to drain out there rear) and rad braces, they should be out soon.
.
You can chug this bike, you can rev it out. The power always seems to be there whenever you want to hit it. I Love it. Sorry. If its any consolation, Its getting terrible weather wise here, hope to go maybe this weekend if it gets better. Until then, I have to go out in my garage and stare. You're gonna feel in heaven on it. Allright, this is getting too mushy here.

Your excited!!

As am I.

Shop didn't do much for set up, they never even put oil in the engine.
Still get to "Tinker " this week end with that stuff, ...makes time go by

Did they charge you a "set up fee" ? It should say how much on your receipt..I've heard some salesmen charge over $100 for set up...

Oh well..You're bike looks sweet...The bright yellow plastic on your old one looks cool too...

Posted by: funfactor1---------------------

Yamahas fit and finish is better than a Honda and as for reliability a yamaha kicks hondas butt. Motocross action put it best if Yamaha Wasn't the first to bring out the 4- strokes we would all still be riding 2-stokes

Posted by: Jamir---------------------

I'll be honest here. I like the way my One Industries kit looks over the Yamaha. I am not sure what it is, I just do. But......BUT, they both look kick ass!!!!

Posted by: fundgh---------------------

The yamaha racing yellow scheme is sweeeeheeeeheeet! I would love to paint every bike in my garage like that! If I wasn't so happy with my KDX (too bad yamaha doesn't make one of those in that yellow scheme!), I'd be looking at the 06 in Yellow! By the way, has anybody seen any stickers that portray the yellow, white, and black?

Posted by: FruDaddy---------------------

I'd like to see the graphics on a blue one.

Posted by: Zoomer---------------------

zcookie49,
the yellow plastic from Yamaha, is now available.
I have a complete set in the garage!

Posted by: SFO---------------------

Congrats Mike, new bike looks great.
Umm, I want one.

Posted by: Zoomer---------------------

Hey Bill
Good to hear from you!!!
Yeh, cant wait to try it out. man it was 15 below here couple hours ago. sucks. (note to self, must move south)

was talking with a guy at our mc club banquet last week end,
conversation kind of went this way.
him: yeah, i was talking with Heath voss, you dont need an 06, you can make the 05 handle just as good as the 06.blah, blah blah.....

MZ, mine has a 5 speed and is yellow, good by.

Posted by: Zoomer---------------------

Here is the 450 ready for the season. I know, wheres the Hurricane Decals...There on the shelf wrapped up and protected. fenders and all. Saving all the original parts, why,? who knows.

Posted by: zcookie49---------------------

looks good Zoomer. I too have only been able to ride the bike one time since I got it back in January because of this sucky weather we've been having out here as well. Cant wait for the thaw out and some riding!!!!

Posted by: Zoomer---------------------

Finally had a chance to ride this thing this last week end!!!
I am impressed with what Yamaha has done.

Motor has torque and revs, pulls like a moose.
Out of the box suspension is unreal, best I have ever ridden.
Talk about smoooooth. I road the first hour with out touchen the clickers, then set everything to mid as it was on the stiff side out of the box, what a differance.

I was wondering if I made a mistake selling the 04 525 and going back to Yammie, not any more. FUN bike.

Now if only I could hang on for more then 2 laps......

Posted by: john3_16---------------------

Sounds good! Went to the track a couple of weeks ago and saw a yellow and black 06'YZ450 and it looked and sounded pretty strong...The guy riding it grabbed a pretty solid holeshot on it too but I guess the power wore him out because he faded a little...He wasn't the best rider but the Yamaha looked like it covered alot of mistakes..I watched it closely and the bike didn't swap or kick like the other bikes...

Chad Reed should have a better outdoor season this year if it handles as good as it looked.

LOL, I always love how sometimes we read what we want to read. Didn't the YZ come in like 4th in one of the other pubs and 3rd in another? Not that I take them all that seriously, but interesting observation. I hardly agree that the YZ is better in fit and finish, as far as reliability, I haven't had my CRF long enough to know, but from what I gather, the YZ might be a bit more bullit proof. Handling wise, I love the CRF. Frankly, I am hearing that all the bikes are getting so close that it all depends on what color you like and your relationship with your dealer, etc....

btw, I like the YZ in yellow, my 1st bike was a YZ60 and 2nd was a YZ80 (both yellow of course) .
