This describes how to change the springs:

Pretty good description.

Also you service manual shows you how to change the oil and remove the fork springs. So if you don't have it already get it. Also the new springs should have came with new preload spacers or most likely just a tube of PVC piping (1 inch) and you can either cut your own spacers depending on how you want to shock to react or use the stock aluminum spacers that are in the fork already. Check out the main site for a little description on preload spacers and their effect. http://www.dirtrider.net/justkdx/ click on the tech tips link on the left and then the latest tech tips.
Good Luck with it!

You really want to remove the valve body from the bottom of the fork and disassemble it. There is quite a bit of goo and splooge that accumulates on the bottom, and no, it does not drain out if you invert the forks. Even overnight. Even if you rinse it with a little oil. Ask me how I know... 14mm allen, or welded bolt, required. Air ratchet very helpful.

Plus, then you can do the coveted shim stack mod.

I would suggest that you reuse the stock spring seats that are on the bottom of the stock springs. Rock beats scissors! I mean steel beats aluminum, so protect it!

Red_Chili, how do you know? :-) That sludge builds up EVERYWHERE. :-( Getting SOME out is better than none though, so DO change the oil as best you can when you change the springs. It is the LIFE BLOOD of forks (and the shock, too).

Fooley, you may want to consider getting a set of new/used XR400 springs, I hear they are better. I can't remember why think they are longe,r but do a search they come in .38KG and .40KG.
