ok, here goes. 22 yo, 5'11, 210 lbs. Limited riding experiance, mostly on quads, a few bikes as well, but have never owned a dirt bike. Looking for a cheap 2 stroke with a large aftermarket. I have found a '87 yz250 for what I think is a fair price, would that be a good bike. Of course I have already heard the 250 is to big to start get a 125, but I am not wanting to go bigger in 2 months so unless everybody comes out and tells me I am an idiot.....

as far as parts avalibility is this a good choice? I have the mechanical skill to fix anything so that is not a problem. It will see mostly trail/field riding.

At your size, get a 250. They're easier to ride than a 125 anyway.

Do you really want something as old as an '87? I hope it's really cheap. You could run into problems finding aftermarket stuff for something that old.

My bro bought a 2000 KX250 in good condition for $1500 almost a year ago. If you look around you could probably find a mid 90s model 250 for around a grand.

Thanks man, yeah I am still looking, just haven't been able to fine anything later for less than 2g around here, if I could find something I was comfortable with for less than 1500 local then I would probably scoop it up.

Where are you at?

I'm looking on that unmentionable auction site right now - I'm seeing some stuff that might work for you if you were near it. For example:

1998 RM250 - Buy it now for $1795 - lots of extras

1994 RM250 - Bid is just over $1000 with about 18 hours left

1999 KX250 - no bids, starting price of $1800 22 hours left

2000 KX250 - $1200 with 24 hours left

1998 KTM250SX - $1000 with 36 hours left

1998 KX250 - Buy it now $1900

2001 KTM250SX - Buy it now $1900

Thanks guys that is a few places to start, to answer the first question I am in TN. I will check out all those links in a few minutes.

If you're willing to drive, there's a few bikes on the Ohio Pit Racer site at the moment. Don't know whether they've been sold or not. Look here:

http://www.pitracer.com/classified-...goryid=3&page=1

On the second page, there's a NICE 2001 KTM250SX for $1800. Appears its located in Columbus, Ohio. A lot of people are willing to meet you halfway or at least come your way 50 miles or something. Of course, you'd want to see the bike anyway, so . . .

Thanks rob, you have been a great help. I am defiatnly doing some more looking now, as driving is not a problem. I will let everybody know what I finally decide on.
