Hey ladies & gents,

What is the weight limit for a modern-era YZ or CR 125 or 144 two-stroke? I'm 175 to 180 lbs. and plan on using it for trails, jumps, and learning to ride (my first bike). Am I too heavy for this bike (just for fun, not racing)? I'm not opposed to going the 250 route, or 200/220 route with the KDX, but if I'm not too much of a tubby I think the 125 might make me a better rider. Let me know your thoughts.

-Cheers

When I got back into dirt I was on a 91 CR125 and was 5'10 at 197#, and it pulled me just fine. This is even racing MX, I don't think the old suspension did me too well with casing a bunch of jumps then, but if you stay on the pipe you will go plenty fast.

It is arguable that the 125/144 would make you a better rider - If you learn to ride one of those fast, you'll pretty much be able to ride anything fast, IMHO.

As to a 125, I don't think 175 or 180 is too heavy - even for racing. . . The weight would be a bit of a disadvantage on the track compared to my 140 lbs, but most guys I'm racing against are probably 160-170 anyway.

As to the 144, there is no question it's got enough power to pull you around. My motor was amazing compard to stock, but I had never had mine running 100% after I got it back in January (lots of cold weather and mud around here). I discovered that my slow jet was COMPLETELY clogged. I cleaned the whole carb and repacked the silencer.

I reassembled the carb and everything last night and took it for a ride up the street.

Freakin awesome! I roll on it about 2/3 throttle in 4th gear and it wheeled so much that I had to let off the gas or I would have been on my butt. Dad was just watching and he couldn't believe it. He said, "I never thought a 125 could do that so easily." I responded, "It's not a 125 . . ."

I posted the following question to member bclapham before I had the 144 done. His answer follows - note his weight and where he was racing . . . :

1: Type of porting you had?

2: Maintenance compared to a normal 125?

Thanks

2. dont know, i bought the bike as a basket case.

However, i will say i changed the ring every 5 race meetings, and the piston every 10 meetings. If that sounds excessive, the pistons from Eric are cheap and the gaskets can be had really cheap from www.peakmoto.com and bear in mind that each race meeting consisted of the bike carring a 230lbs Vet that should know better up and down the massive hills at Glen Helens back REM saturday races.

Man, was that bike fun.

Here's a link to my first ride report if you're interested . . . The bike is even stronger now than it was when I wrote this:
