dang,, i was eating and broke about a quarter of my rear tooth off,, what should i do (besides call dentist),,, could i have it shaved down smooth? capped? can anyone recommend a fix?

thanks.

Had that happen last fall and I ended up getting it capped. Wasn't really painfull so like a dummy I let it go until it did start to hurt and ended up with a root canal also. Mine was a molar also

Mine did the same eating icecream of all things!!! Actually, mine was due to stress fractures caused by grinding my teeth when sleeping. My dentist used gold to redo/shape the molar instead of enamel. Gold is more forgiving and luckily the molar affected was far in the back of my mouth so even when I smile you can't see it.
Definately don't wait to have it repaired and good luck!

I had mine break off last Fall. The dentist was able to just patch it up with amalgam. It's the same stuff they use for fillings. It cost me $170.

I hear you can fix most anything with JB Weld

Heh!! I was doing research for an article on the effects of dental hygiene from the rising popularity of mouth 'grillz' however, I could not get any of the jewelry makers to talk to me.

I broke half a lower front tooth off in 1972. Mike Hill and I tangled up over a jump, and I tried to bite Mike's handlebar off. The handlebar won that little contest.

My dentist drove little nails down into the remainder of the tooth, and built up on the nails. It looked sorta like a tooth, but never did feel right.

After a few years, that tooth started to bug me, and got progressivly worse for twenty years, until I got a root canal. By that time it must have had a pocket of infection at the root, and when the endodontist slid the needle into the lower gum and injected the carbocain, I just about died right there in the chair. Son Of A Bitch That Hurt!!!!! I swear the worst pain I have yet experienced in this life and thirty years of racing.

After that, the root canal went as planned, and my mouth felt better than it had for years. Then the infection and pain returned as bad as ever. $700.00 for a root canal down the drain.

Now here is the bad part. I was actually afraid to get another procedure done, as the endodontist had hurt me so badly. I put if off as long as I could, but eventually had to get something done. I just wanted that tooth gone. By then it had been hurting me for about 25 years, I was old, ugly and fat anyway, so I wasn't much worried about my looks. Any of you know me, you know what I am talking about.

So I got my local dentist to jerk it out. As I related my (endodontist) horror story to the Doc, he shook his head and promised to do better. And he did. He did some magic with the needle, and did not hurt me at all.

Now I have a gap in my lower teeth, but have been pain free for years. Hooray!!

Nevada Sixx; I don't know if any of this will help you make a decision, but I hope your experience is better than mine.

Almost!

I broke 2 of my front teeth so i had to have them capped with enamel. Did it on my BMX bike as a kid. Never go down a set of stairs (over a hundred) with no brakes. I couldnt make the turn and kissed a oak tree at the turn.

Do yourself a favor and just have it pulled out. DMD's will offer all kinds of fixes including root canals for big $$ , but in a couple of years the pain and suffering will be back with a vengance...
Remember, most dental offices will make you feel guilty about wanting to pull a tooth when other options are available. which procedure do you think they make more money on ??
good luck

ok, im back from the dentist,,he gave me the option of having it filled and built up for 150 bux, or getting a crown for 750.. i got the tooth filled, if it comes off maybe i'll get the crown later. I hope it will hold for a while. His assistant was a hottie i know that!!!!!!
