05 CRF250R. valve lifter question

After we thought we finally had this motor running again, we came across yet another problem. I was riding on sunday and felt the motor bog a little bit, so I pulled off because I figured something was wrong. As I was riding the bike back to the truck, I heard a nasty knocking noise so I shut the bike off right away. We took it apart, and everything seemed fine at first, until we pulled one of the valve lifters off and realized it was cracked and about a third of it was shattered.
Any ideas of what could have caused this to happen?
We have cleaned it out as good as we can, and hopefully there isn't any metal chips leftover that we may have not got?
Any suggestions would be great!

Check the valves and guides and especialy the one that the lifter was broken. Probably you had your piston slam on the valve causing a bend on the stem thas keeping the valve tide in the valve guide causing the lifter to crack after excesive force to open the valve.
