Hey, I am in the market for a nice dirtbike, and I wanted to know what is out there for me.. First off, I will let you know a bit about me:
-6'0" tall; 200+ pounds; and 21 years old
-very aggressive, but respectful style
-I hate mechanics, prefer to tinker myself
-I prefer older bikes for there is a greater aftermarket availability
-$2000.00 to spend, preferably less, lol! (easier to get the trailer)
-Enduro, trails, and sand will be my primary riding places. Oh, and mud.
-possibly need to make it streetable (really easy here in Montana)
-2-4 stroke is not too important to me, but the torque and lower emissions of the 4 might be better
-I will NOT leave this bike alone! Whatever I get should have a great aftermarket backup to it!

Alrighty, if there are any questions from there, I will answer them as quickly as I can, okay? I have no real preference to any manufacturer, and My main concern is 125cc versus 250cc. I like the smaller because the lighter weight will let me throw it around a little easier; but will my muscular (I play college ball) weight might kill the engines' power? Is the weight of most 250's not much greater than the 125's? Will my heavy butt tax the 125 suspension too much?

I am an aggressive person, no matter what bike, quad, or vehicle is at my control. I want a bike that will respond well to my input, but be able to withstand harsh riding and maneuvering. There is no mercy for anything I own, but all are treated with respect, and never truly abused. I am not interested in anything over 250cc unless my weight requires it, and besides, bikes that larger are usually either pure MX or sand-only, right? I am looking for something that is good at everything, a well-rounded bike.

Can y'all help me? Thanks so much.

i think you would have more fun on the 250f my bro has one he is your same hight and my dad rides it he weighs about 265 pounds and he rides it fine

200 pounds = 250 2 stroke/450 4 stroke. A 125 2 stroke/250 4 stroke will move you around ok, but you won't be as happy - it will just move you around ok - not great.

As to lower emissions of a 4 stroke vs. 2 stroke, I wouldn't get too excited about it. Compare either to one of the countless semi trucks running down the highway and the bikes aren't much by comparision. . .

If you're concerned about weight, the 250 2 stroke will be lighter than the 450 4 stroke. I'm 145 lbs and I can throw a 125 around. You won't have any problem with a 250.

Personally, if I were you, I'd look for a CR250 or an RM250. The are both noted for great handling characteristics.

For $2000 or less, you're going to be looking in the late 90s to early 2000s range as far as year. I found my bro a 2000 KX 250 for $1500 last May, so you might get into the 2000-2002 range for $2000 or less if you shop around.

Nice... Nice...

I really do appreciate your responses! I think that I will take your advice on sticking with a two-stroke 250cc bike; my next question is this:

Who makes a two-stroke 250cc? Aren't most of the new 250's four stroke?

And there is always my all-important question: Which bike has the best aftermarket backup? I will not leave this bike stock, I can assure you! Should I look for something in a 1998-2000 250cc two-stroke from the KX, CR, YZ, or RM series? Who would have the best back-up, the YZ?

Sorry for all the questions, but I like to know exactly what I am getting into around here, lol!

Thanks so much!

This should keep you busy on the technical side of things. . .

From the guy who built my motor:

http://www.ericgorr.com/twostktech/twostroketech.html

http://www.ericgorr.com/techarticles/techarticles.html

Each brand tends to have their own characteristics. For example, RM's have long been known for their very quick corner "carving". KX's tend to be known for straight line stability at speed - for example, thru whoops.

CR's are generally known for being the best handling combination of the two. YZ's are, I think, are balanced similar to the CR's, but not quite as good as far as handling.

In recent years, the YZ's have tended to have the strongest motors. CR's have long been known to have the best ergonomics and fit/finish. I wouldn't have bought an RM prior to the late 1990s.

For $1500-1800, I'd look 1999-2001. You should be able to come up with something nice - but be patient - don't buy the first thing that comes along unless it's really what you want.

All of the brands have virtually equal hop up possibilities - which is to say, nearly endless. You will get the best motor results out of porting/polishing, head work, overbores, followed by pipes, etc . . .

Having the suspension re-valved for your weight will make you happier as well, from what I understand.

I should mention: if I do plan on racing, I will be doing mostly Hare Scrambles along with the occasional enduro throwm in. I am not too big a fan of supercross, so I doubt I'd ever do that. That means (in my mind) that I will not need a bike that is all bottom-end, but a good mix of both the bottom and the top. I do like the Yamahas and the Hondas (especially anything with a Red/Black color combo), so I think that I may be making my choice between the two.. Thanks so much! I especially appreciate the links to the spring-rate help!

If you're going to be doing HS/Enduro, then get the 250 2 stroke, no question.
