Depending on your weight, I'd look for a 125 or 250 2 stroke. You could geet a nice one 3-5 years old for $2000+/-

Judging by the fact that you want to ride tracks you should focus on a motocross model, and since you dont have any riding experience I would say focus on a 125 two stroke or even a 250 four stroke to get started. They still have plenty of get up and go and are very fun bikes, yet they dont have so much power to get you into too much trouble while you are just learning. Now that being said, depending on your weight that could change and that would depend on which model I would say to focus on once your skills develop. But even if you are 200lbs+ these size bikes would be fine to learn on and since you dont plan to race with your first bike anyway you can move up in size if you decide it is necessary later.

Actually, I would. If the person were an experienced mechanic with a budget for a brand new bike and an unlimited budget for parts and maintenance, a 4 stroke would be perfect for that person - particularly a 450F as opposed to the less reliable 250F. For example, Ricky Carmichael, James Stewart and the kid whose dad is very mechanically inclined and makes $75,000.00/yr or more are perfect candidates for a 4 stroke MX bike.

However, a lot/most of the people posting in the "Which bike for me" forum are not highly experienced mechanics and do not have an unlimited budget for parts and maintenance.

I'm sure I would quite enjoy owning a 4 stroke MX bike - I'm highly interested in technology, and I am fascinated by the technology in those motors. It is indisputable that they are on the cutting edge. Once I actually start making a more significant amount of money, I would certainly look into the 4 stroke side of things - but it would have to be a LOT more money because of my school loan situation and the extra expense of the 4s.

However, on an equal displacement basis, the 2 stroke is still clearly the superior machine. Smokers are less expensive to maintain, lighter, quicker and more fun.

Thus, for the "average" person, it's my opinion that a 2 stroke bike is the best choice.

For example, the guy who posted here has never ridden before. Thus, it's reasonable to assume that he hasn't done any dirt bike maintenance as well. Looks to me like the 2 stroke would be a better starting point - unless he went with an XR or something . . .
