hey everyone, im new here and im looking to purchase my first bike this summer, heres the questions
1) 20yrs old / 5'10" / 175-180
2) Not very agressive at first until i get comfortable on something
3) gravel pits, fields, trails
4) ive riden my friends bikes before, 50cc and 80cc(when i was younger), xr250 (now), thought it was a little heavy
5) no racing
6) i can do my own work
7) honda or yamaha since they are close to me, maybe kawasaki / looking at 2 stroke because of weight
8) Honda is very close, yamaha isnt too far, kawa and suzuki are around
9) looking to spend 2500 cdn/2200usd
ive been looking at cr, yz 125s..also i read that 250s are smoother and possibly better for trails? correct me if ive read bad information
thanks everyone for opinions

honda has a more linear powerband but i think the newer 250 pulls harder in the middle then the YZ...the 250's are more smoother (you dont have to rev near as much) so they are better for trails.

A 250 motocross bike will work, but you'll probably struggle at first. A good bike to learn on that still has lots of pep is the Kawasaki KDX200.

so i guess i should stay away from a 125?
seems to me the 125 is little more in my range, but give me reasons too save a bit more for the 250!

also ive noticed that yamahas are a bit cheaper then hondas (cant find a honda 250 for under 3000, found a few yamis)

No racing, just trails, lean toward the KDX line. Unless you can find a Yamaha WR (but it's a thumper) in your price range.

I agree with Frudaddy. For the type of riding you plan on doing, your experience level, and price range I dont think you can go wrong with a KDX 200 or 220. They are great all around bikes and you can find a decent used one in your price range.

Hondas usually keep their value a little better than other brands. Yes, 125s are cheaper, but they make very little low end. I'm 20lbs less than you and there's no way I'd ride a 125, unless I was going to put a stroker/big bore to up the displacement a lot. Even the KDX is a little underpowered, but since you're learning I doubt you'll think it's down on power. A 250 two-stroke (my preference is either YZ or CR) is probably one of the best choices as you can definitely grow with it.

in response to that, you make sense that i might "grow out of it" once i get the hang of riding a bike, also, as long as someone isnt an idiot, im sure anyone can handle anything, so i guess a 250 would just take getting use to, and as i learn, i can slowly up the throttle.
can i get any comments on the kx250? ive seen a few locally that are really close to my price range (year 2000-2002)

You'll get arguements about Honda superiority from some but all the manufacturers make a decent bike nowadays. They all have known strengths and weaknesses. From what I recall when I was looking for a 250 a couple of seasons ago 2000 was a very strong year for the KX250.

I'm your height and weight and bought my first bike a month and a half ago. I'm riding a RM125 bored to a 144 along with some mild porting and the bike moves me around no problem. It also moves a buddy of mine who is 40lbs heavier then me and has been riding for 15 years no problem. 125's are fun bikes that from what I've been told and now have experienced briefly, force you to learn how to ride well. Get a 125 and then once you think you need it, send the motor for a big bore kit.

how is yours in the trails with the mods youve put on?

I've been doing trails and desert a couple times a week and it does really well. The only place it lags a bit is in sand but part of that is my lack of experience and not going into the sand with more speed/momentum. The only thing I'm changing is I'm going to add a flywheel weight to smooth out the low end a little bit. Theres a lot more shifting involved then on a 4 stroke but I think it's good for me to learn. Gear selection is much more critical then a 4 stroke because you don't have that low end grunt but I really haven't come up with any negatives of it being a 125 or a 2 stroke yet. It's plenty of bike ot learn on and get hurt on
