iam having trouble getting the spring out. it feels like its going to break before it pops out. any tips would be very helpful.

did you get the cable unhooked? just put a small headed screw driver down there and pop it out. just be careful.

I pull the spring back as far as I can, then take a pair of needle nose pliers and grab the cable as close to the spring as possible - it holds the spring back and you can then use the pliers to move the cable around to get it out.
