KDX 200, KTM 200. Avoid 125 MX'ers.

I agree.

Xc-w.

For casual trail riding: KDX200/220
If there is even a chance of racing get a KTM 200XC or XC-W. If the terrain is very tight, get the XC. It has a close ratio gearbox. If the terrain opens up more, get the XC-W. It has a wide ratio box. The XC also has SX style suspension, and more of a middleground setting between enduro and motocross. It is more of a do-it-all type of bike.

would the ktm 250 xcw have a major hit in the powerband or would it be smoother delivery than the 200. ive decided i wanna go ktm but not sure on 200 or the 250. will be riding a mix of wide open trails and tight trails occassionally

got my vote for a kdx. They are really easy to maintain and they are very reliable and if you wanted you could race it in some harescrambles.

One of the best things about the KTM motors is powerband tunability. You can tune the powervalve in to deliver the power anywhere from ultra-smooth to a violent hit in less than 5 minutes. I can tune my 250sx to be so lazy smooth that you dont have a hit at all, make it hit like a 125, or anywhere in between.
