Try to include the following info in your first post
1) your physical size (both height and weight are important)
I am 15 about 5'8'' 130
2) How physical / aggressive are you ?
I am pretty aggressive and comfortable on bikes now
3) what do you plan to ride- MX/SX tracks, woods, fields with friends or ?????
I plan to do mx tracks, woods, any riding in general.
4) Do you have any riding experience?
I have ridden a ds80 suzuki and now i have a cr80 but i am just to big for it. I still do think the cr80 has got some wicked kick but as far as size its just to small.
5) Do you think you will race ?
no
6) Are you mechanically inclined and will you be doing your own bike work?
I am learning and i have some friends that definalty know what they are doing.
7) Do YOU have a preferance to a brand/ motor choice (2 or 4 stroke)?
Two stroke for $ reasons and easier to work on
8) Do you have a dealer close by your home that you might use and what brand(s) does he carry?
Honda, suzuki, kawasaki, yamaha
9) How much do you plan to spend on a bike?
I am searching for a bike between 1996 and 2002 hoping to spend under 2 grand.
10) anything else that you think would help form an opinion
I am just wondering what years would be as old as i could go but has decent brakes and suspension.

Pick a color.

For $2000 and under you should be in the 2000-2003 range.

In April 2005, I found a great deal on my 2002 RM 125 for $1500. My buddy recently got a prime 2003 RM 125 for $1900.

Even a 1996 would have "decent" brakes and suspension. The problem is that it can be difficult to find any bike in good condition for less than $1000.00-$1200.00 - even a 1996.

Thus, you're probably better off to look to spend a bit more than that if you can afford it and get something year 2000 or newer.

A couple examples not too horribly far away from you:

Which brand typically has the lowest seat height? Or are they all the same? It doesn't really matter i guess on the track, but if im riding woods an inch or so lower may help.

Posted by: robwbright---------------------

They're all tall.

At your height (with the proper race sag set and all that jazz), I wouldn't think it would be too much of a problem.

If it is, you can cut the seat foam and/or the bottom of the subframe and lower the seat 1-2 inches.

I'm only 5'4" and manage alright - although, I agree that woods are more difficult than the track.

the yz125 will have a 39.1-39.25in. seat height. the kx125 will have a 37.2in. seat height. the rm125 will have a 37.3-37.8in. seat height. the cr125 will have a 37.3-37.8in. seat height. the ktm125sx will have a 36.45in. seat height. the ktm's seat height is too small for you, but the kx,cr, or rm125 would be good. the yz125 would fit you pretty well, but not well enough for trails probably. let me add on to what rob started:http://adcache.cycletrader.com/5/8/9/83932189.htm,

http://adcache.cycletrader.com/5/1/3/84099713.htm. sorry, no honda's and i didnt search for ktm's.

rob, does bored .80 over mean he made the engine 80% bigger? by the way 4runner, im on a 00' kx125 and its pretty fast, youll do fine on anything newer than a 2000 year model.

Posted by: MXGirl230---------------------

Being bored .080 over it is now a 134cc
The cylinder is something like 2mm bigger, I think...I am horrible with numbers and well pretty much anything to do with numbers..

Same here! Should have done mine and yours with that guy!

No - MXGirl is right from what I understand. That's a 133 or 134 - 2mm over. Stock 125 pistons are 54mm. 134 is 56 mm and 144 is 58mm.

My 144 is 4mm over. The 134 and 144 have about the same peak HP, but the 134 revs better and the 144 has a broader power spread. From the dynos on here, a stock 125 has 30-33 HP and a 144 has 37-39. (The highest HP in a 144 I've seen was 39.4 or 39.6).

Although, my 144 revs better than stock.

Here's a pic of what a 144 bore looks like with a 125 piston in it.

Posted by: robwbright---------------------

BTW, I didn't mean to say that a stock 125 isn't fast - I got beat by a stock 1995 KX 125 on Saturday (of course the rider was a pro till 1998).

It's just that a 144 is a totally different motor.

Thanks guys and gals for all your help. Now i just gotta figure out how to get lucky and sell my cr80 02 for atleast 1300. What do u think is the highest i should advertise it for. It runs really well starts on first kick and its a 2002 CR80 with a fesh topend.

Posted by: 4unner4life---------------------

last time i checked cycle trader it was like 45 dollars to post an ad. Yea i have pics tho

Posted by: 4unner4life---------------------

Alright ive narrowed my picks to this http://adcache.cycletrader.com/5/7/5/84131475.htm or one of my friends friends 2004 RM125. He said he price it under 2000 definalty so i offered 1650 and im waiting for his answer. These are generous people that are selling the RM, so im h oping i get a deal. Any ways what do u think of the Kawasaki?

Posted by: robwbright---------------------

Assuming they're both in good shape, the 2004 RM for $2000 is a better deal than the 1999 KX for $1499. If your friend won't do $1650, then offer $1800. You'd still be getting a steal, IMO.

I spent $1500 for my 2002 RM 125 last April/May, and I considered that a very good deal.

The KX has a nicely cut seat and looks like its in great shape for a 99. I suspect the dealer would sell that KX if you brought $1300 in cash.

Posted by: 4unner4life---------------------

AHH! They just sold that kx125, and the guy priced the rm125 at 2200 which is out of my range. Someone offered 1500 for my cr80, so i am hoping to spend now more than 1700 on a 125. I am a poor 15 year old. The search continues.

Posted by: 4unner4life---------------------

Alright, I sold my CR80 for $1200. Now its time to go looking at bikes. I am stongly leaning towards this bike: http://adcache.cycletrader.com/5/3/2/83626032.htm

I am going to look at it, so is there anything i should pay particular attention to besides: brakes, making sure it gets through all the gears and what not. The price now is 2000 but he said it was overpriced. What should i offer. I was thinking 1800.
Yz's are 5 spds correct?

Posted by: DSelect---------------------

Hey 4runner thats is funny i was looking at that same bike. before i decided to go with a 250 2-smoke (well still looking anyways) Where in raleigh do you live? you know of some good places to ride? when ever get a bike. Let me know

Posted by: 4unner4life---------------------

I live in North Raleigh, off of durant. I ride at Archers lodge(in clayton). I love that place. i also ride a NCMP(Henderson). But ya ill let you know when i get a bike.

Posted by: 4unner4life---------------------

Alright guys and gals, I am going to look at this bike and hopefully buy it if all goes well. What should I look for and what is an acceptable offer for this bike: http://adcache.cycletrader.com/5/3/2/83626032.htm

The guy said everything runs great. He didnt mention doing a topend job any time soon, how should that affect my offer?

Thanks in advance( hehe the bike is in Advance, NC)

Posted by: 4unner4life---------------------

Well i bought the bike, for $1700. Great deal. It is a strong running bike. The only problem with it was a dent in the pipe. The guy also gave me his boots, pants and helmet. I am going to take it to Brushy Mountain Motorsports park on friday so ill let you know how it goes there. I am coming off an 80 so its gonna be tough in the woods.

Posted by: NM_KDX200---------------------

When I got my KX125, I rode it once for about 20 minutes and then tore the top end down and checked everything. First thing I found was that the powervalve was carboned up and wasn't even connected. I put a new piston/rings, gaskets, cleaned everything up, changed the tranny oil, replaced the air filter, cut 1/2" off the handlebars, checked the spokes, checked all nuts and bolts, new radiator fluid, checked the reeds, greased the linkage and swingarm and headset, and THEN I went riding.

I just don't trust used bikes until I've personally gone thru them.

Congrats on the YZ, though.
