who's got a dent in their pipe?

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

Posted by: kawicam125---------------------

hey guys, i know there's a 1:1,000,000 chance that anyone that hasnt just put a new pipe on or just bought a 2t doesnt have a dent. who's put a ding in their pipe ( i know this sounds weird......)?

Posted by: robwbright---------------------

2 tiny ones right in the front. No more than 1/8 inch deep and 1/2inch across.

Posted by: ls1cameric---------------------

Got a few but no major ones. no more than 3/4" across. Cant faze the Fatty!

Posted by: MXGirl230---------------------

My old CR I have one quarter sized dent and a dime sized one right around the plate that says "platinum".

New YZ is dent free
Phil's new YZ not soo much...some idiot tried to pass him on the EDGE of the track and the other guys foot peg "scraped" right across the pipe. So a footpeg sized one right across the widest part.Good thing it's still the stocker That happened the first race with it

Posted by: rm_racer---------------------

I have one where it tipped over in the back of the truck and hit the bed side and a couple smaller ones that I dont know what they are from. None of them are much deeper then 1/4". Why do you ask?

Posted by: fizzle---------------------

Totaled my stock pipe this weekend. Gave me an excuse to get a Gnarly. Hope it's a little more bomb-proof than the stocker. I still don't have a good idea how I did it....still sore.

So yea, I have a shiny brand new Gnarly without a single blemish on the YZ.

Lots of dings...........crushed one so good once (log crossing) it pulled out of the cylinder! With air pressure and heat on the dent, you'd be suprised what you can straighten out. Still ugly, but some woods guys are proud of the scars. Arrrrr

Posted by: SpeedyManiac---------------------

My carbon fibre pipe guard has seen better days, but the pipe is fine. Pipe guards are worth it.

Posted by: F150Motocrosser---------------------

I've dented a couple of my KTM pipes..

Heat and air pressure! Thats a great idea, Thanks. I was going to use the stinger that the body shop uses to pull dents out on fenders they can't get behind, but your method sounds much better. ( sorry to bust into your thread kawicam125).

Posted by: tabndust---------------------

3 small ones

Posted by: kamchuka---------------------

just pulled em from my woods bike this weekend. had a couple gnarley ones, i did it old school, mainly cuz im harder than smart...LOL i welded nails all over the dents and then pulled em with vice grips and a hammer till shes perfectly str8......yeah right. looks awful but it saved me 2hun, and i just bent my aluminium gaurd back into place and you can barely see em.

Posted by: mx547---------------------

if you don't have a dent, you don't ride.

Posted by: SVTMc-G---------------------

Mine came dented...free of charge!

Posted by: Treejumper---------------------

One big one for me.

Posted by: Robert in Sadorus---------------------

about 6, 1 big one i pulled out, and 5 little ones.

Posted by: ziptiedEXC---------------------

Heat and air pressure! Thats a great idea.

Anyone trying this better be careful, too much heat and too much air pressure= BOOM

Posted by: Papakeith---------------------

Heat and airpressure is NOT a great idea!

I know there are those that do it and do it without injury. HooRay for them.

All I envision is a fuel/oil soaked pipe heated until it flares. Wait! it's capped at both ends! It's a Bomb!
Please people don't try this method. The risk isn't worth the gain.

I have heard (not tried personally) that if you fill it with water leaving only a little space, cap it and throw it into the deep freeze that the dents will magically pop out. I have met 2 people who swear by this method. Again, I haven't tried it personally...I don't have a deepfreeze, only a normal freezer.

Posted by: twoslow---------------------

It takes more than heat and pressure, first you need to make two air tight bungs and a means to secure them in place to block both ends of the pipe, second you need to pressurise the pipe via one of the bungs to around 120 psi, third you need an oxy set to heat the dent cherry red, forth you need to tap around the outer edge of the dent with a ballpein hammer and watch the sucker pop back out.All that being said it is a little harder than one might think. Also note your nice chrome pipe is going to look like a burnt saucepan after your finished, hint a standard old flat black finished pipe with a coat of paint will come up like new.Second hint keep a roll of toilet paper handy just in case a bung lets go and you get a nasty mess in your pants and by the way don't stand in the line of fire.

How would you cap it? The only thing I can think of is those rubber plugs with bolts through them. The ones used to pressure test radiators.

I heard about the heat/air pressure methode before too. I have an FMF Fatty pipe with a "half of a tennis ball" sized dent in it. Since a new pipe is $200 and I still have my stocker, what would be the harm in trying it. This methode works like a charm.

Here is what I did:

-Take an old tube and cut the valve stem out, leaving enough material so you have a 6 inch circle with the valve stem in the center.

-Fold the material over the stinger end of the pipe and secure with two hose clamps. One at the end, and one about 1/2 an inch down.

-Make 2 or 3 eight inch circles from your donor tube. Fold them over the "head end" of the pipe and secure with hose clamps. I used two clamps again.

-Fill the pipe with 30-40 pounds of air. (More would be very dangerous) The head end bulged a little. So I wraped it loosely in a shop towel in case it popped.

-Heat the dent up until glowing red, I used a propane torch (The kind used to solder water pipes). Slowly heat from one side of the crease towards the center of the dent. Working your way around the perimeter towards the center.

-Slowly but surely the dent came out.

-I wore a face sheild.

-I kept the dent facing away from my body (in case of an explosion)

-I constantly monitored the air pressure with a pressure gauge.

-I only needed 35 lbs of air.

If you give this methode a try, just be safe. I had a fire extinguisher handy, but nothing caught fire.

Good luck, Steve.

With the aid of a wood turning lathe I turned the bungs needed and fitted a air tool coupling nipple to the bigger of the bungs, these were then secured with wire and then I had no problem getting 120psi air pressure in.

who doesnt?

Posted by: Crunch---------------------

I collected my first dent, and a rather large one too, at Dirtweek 2005. But it was worth it!

I've used dry ice with good results. Don't even need to take it off the bike.

How does that work?

Posted by: Patman---------------------

Dry ice is at -109.3 F so it rapidly shrinks the metal causing the dent to bacically pull itself out. It's not going to fix a crease and it won't make it perfectly smooth but it works well the few times I've tried it on pipes. Obviously you need to use insulated gloves and you hold it on the dent until you get 1"-2" of frost around the dent. By that time the metal should have shrunk enough to cause the dent to undent itself at least somewhat. Let it warm to air temp. Sometimes you need to repeat the process to get the best result.

Posted by: shifty280---------------------

i have a huge dent in my chrome pipe, and i want to try the air pressure and heat trick; has anyone tried this on a chrome pipe? does it damage the finish?

Posted by: Patman---------------------

If you are smart you will attempt less drastic measures first such as the dry ice. Why? Why not? It's less work, less $$ and less potential to leave you be called "OneEyedShifty280" or worse.

BTW are you sure the pipe is nickle plated?

Posted by: vetexrcr---------------------

I own 7 pipes for my kx 500......4 new ,2 needing repair, and one on the bike near needing repair.
There are a few rocks out in the california desert.

Posted by: alligatorbling---------------------

my bike came with lots of dents in the pipe, some small, some awful.... anyways, i sent it to Pacific Crest Pipe Repair, and for 50 bucks they made it look pretty good compared to what it did look like. They have some before and after pics on the site.... My only complaint is that the pipe didnt fit right when i got it back, i had to bend it and work with it to get it back to the right fit, they have a section on that on the site, they dont tell you your pipe wont fit when you get it back, they should though.... but for 50 bucks they restored the original shape with no discoloration.... heres a link for any one interested https://www.piperepair.com

Posted by: Paul.v---------------------

hmmm, what about a strong magnet & heat??? Mine is badly bent up...I'll try that or air...I was actually thinking of cutting & rewelding the pipe

Posted by: dont be a tool---------------------

I have 4 little dents,half-dollar size and smaller,FMF gold,Im going to try the dry-ice,i'll let ya know.
