What 4 strokes have you ridden?

I'm a 2 stroke guy, but in the 125 class, the 250f's (4 stroke MX bikes) have a distinct advantage in ease of ridability. They require somewhat more maintenance than a 2 stroke, and apparently cost more in upkeep, but they have a lot more low/mid power. To come close to evening the playing field as far as the motor, you would need to have the 125 bored out ( as mine is) to 134 or 144, ported, etc. . .

However, speed it 95% rider. A good example of this is my race last week. Until I had a clutch failure (my own fault), I pulled a start on 2 450 4 strokes and 3 250 4 strokes - and beat them all. The only person that beat me in the heat was on a stock 1995 KX 125. BTW, I did beat 250f's last year before my motor was bored out.

So. . . Can you win on a 125? Yes.

Would it be easier on a 250f? Yes. Especially since you haven't ridden 2 strokes much.

BTW, based on everything I've read on here, the CR 125 is not really the best choice in a 125 as far as the motor goes. A KTM or YZ typically seems to have the most powerful motor from the reports here.

You're going to be a bit short and light for a 125/250f. You can cut the seat and subframe to lower it a couple inches. Apparently the KTM 125 has the lowest stock seat height, so you might want to look at them.

thanks for the info Robwright.
i was also looking a CR85R Expert. would this be a good bike for me? and is it true that the big wheel 85s have to race in the 125 class???(heard it in another forum)

Big wheel would have to race in supermini (fast kids).
Would have check rules in your area to see if 85's can run in 125 class. At our local races, 85's (with national level speed) are allowed to run with 125 juniors: Slow 85's are not due to the safety problems.
At 5'3, a 125 will be very tall.
My son is 13 (5'7") on CR125 in 125 Junior class.
We had to go softer on springs and revalve.
He's getting smoked by 4-stokes- but most of the juniors are at least 2 years older.
All my sons coaches recommended he stay on 2-stroke for a year after getting off 85. This has worked very well as the 2-stroke will force a young rider to develop riding skills much quicker.

Good Luck

PS if you plan on racing: attend some schools or have a local pro coach you one-on-one. They will teach you how to ride safely and avoid many ambulance trips!

how tall are you?

Posted by: race_me---------------------

get the 125, i started on an 85 expert at 5''4 140pounds and i got bored really fast. now i have a cr125 and its much better, and a 125 is easier to ride than an 85 in IMO.you can take berms alot easier and whip it around by giving it throttle with a little lean. your tal enough for one but taking off is hard, even for me and im a little taller than you.
