okay so i want to get a bike.. but?

hi i'm nicole 20f from canada.
i grew up driving xr bikes nad a few older CR mx bikes and race quads that have been really fun. - i currantly own a race quad but want to get into MX racing/ riding.
so i'm 5'6" 125lbs. and i'm not sure weather to get a 85, 125, or 250 two stroke bike? i'm not interested in 4 strokes in a dirt bike, just doesnt seem right.
for me im just unsure if its safe to get a bike thats a 1997 or something older, or should i wait and get enough money for a 2002- or 2003 model?
i could probably put a lot of mods in an older bike as it would probably be cheaper.. anyone have advice for me?
