Do the metal gas tanks on the enduros really weigh much more than the aftermarket plastic ones? Enough to make any difference? I'm just about to switch over to a larger capacity plastic one for my DR...

The weight difference in negligible. All the aftermarket tanks are plastic because plastic is cheaper and easier to manufature. Motorcycle tanks are metal on street bikes because of government regulations. In the real world plastic tanks are actually more durable than metal. this observation comes from a dirtbiker with 30 years experience.
