kdx forks

I have a 1990 kdx200 and I just removed the forks, I cannot get the stem out of the lower tree. how do remove the stem from the lower tree?

Heat and press it out with a press. Generally takes around 12-15 tons of pressure to push the stem out.

Are you doing a KX fork swap? If you are the end result is well worth it. Here's my 96 KX125 front end on my 89 KDX 200.

will most bike shops have a press to do that?

Posted by: m0rie---------------------

I don't know about bike shops but just about any machine shop should be able to press the stem out of your KDX clamps and into the KX clamps for a very minimal charge.

are all bikes this way. I hear people swaping for kx forks all the time. how do they swap stems?

I think it will be easier to buy the trees with the stem already there. can anybody help a newbie out I need the the kx front fork clamps with stem to fit my 1990 kdx ? I am willing to pay. also the kdx s with the inverted blue fork willl work to. any one have a extra set?

Does it change your head angle going to a kx fork?

The KX stem will not fit in your steering head. This is why you have to press out your KDX stem and have it pressed into the KX triple clamp. Look for an auction, If you're willing to pay, then pay for the nicest forks you can afford. I got a set of 04 forks in excellent condition with the complete triple tree for about $200, the bottom triple clamp was tweaked though, I couldn't tell until everything was together and the front wheel was leaning toward the one fork. A new bottom clamp is all I'm waiting for now.

Read all the other post on this site and any other KDX site you can find about the conversion. It will take a lot of the frustration out of the process once you understand what needs to be done.

i just found a 1992 kx500 lower clamp and stem and and the oem part number is 44037 which is the same for all kx,kdx all years. i just talked to a dealer and they looked it up. the upper clamps have different part numbers but the lower is the same.

trail-king, you are looking at the reference number, not the part number. Huge difference there.

m0rie, does your upper clamp hit the fuel tank any?

Posted by: trail-king---------------------

can I use my front brakes and wheel from my 90 kdx200 on my 1993 kdx forks?

Posted by: glad2ride---------------------

Dude, you have three threads going (currently) in a row on the same general topic.

Hi, I'm new to all this. Will the kdx stem go into a newer KX lower triple without shimming? Is the diameter of the stem the same where it presses into the clamp? Thanks

Trail-King:

You will not be able to reuse your front brake from you 90 KDX on the KX forks. The bolt holes don't line up correctly. You'll need to get either a KX or H series (95+) KDX brake caliper to use with the KX conversion. Your existing brake line will work fine however if you use a KDX caliper. You can reuse your front wheel if you can find somebody to make you a custom axle that fits your smaller KDX wheel bearings and then sizes up to the opening in the KX forks. Thats what I did for my conversion but its most likely going to be cheaper to get a KX front wheel and axle from e-bay.

Arjay:

Some people find that the KDX stem is a press fit, others need the clamp knurled before the stem is pressed in to ensure a tight fit. There doesn't seem to be much of a pattern. If you take it to a machine shop they should be able to press the stems out and knurl the KX clamp for the KDX stem if necessary. Since your over the pond there is a good chance that your KDX stem has a roll pin in it. You might end up having to break the lower clamp to get the stem out if that is the case. You'll also need to have a spacer for the top clamp machined as well or use a stack of washers to space it up.
