i got a 1986 kdx200 , GREAT BIKE , well i just got it in begining of summer of all places a yard sale . $350 , it started on the third kick, both tires flat tree sap all over looked perrty bad. but i knew under all that it was a scremmer. after a weekend of cleaning, some paint , new seat cover, rebuild carb , plug , tubes , check top runs good about $175 in on top of what i payed. my problem it wants to cut out (a little) on the bottom end , open it up it runs great , i'm playing with the jets ( factory is 320 ) i picked up a 280,290,300,310,320. i live in denver 5280 feet. so now what i want to knew, should i get a new FMF pipe for it? i have factory pipe now . iwas told change and the bottom end will be better .
i'm thinking about changing the reeds too.
any feed back will be great .

You're right, they're great bikes. I had an 88 which was basically the same as the 86. It was a great transition bike from trail riding to racing enduros. Plenty of power when they're running right.

Bearing in mind you've got a good spark, new plug, new filter, cleaned out the jets - bad low end power would suggest lack of compression. Could be the piston and rings getting worn, the bore is worn or scored, or an air leak (Head gasket, base or cases). Maybe run a compression test.

Other causes could be the power valves being clogged or jammed open, or the pv actuating mechanism damaged/stuck. Get a Clymer manual and do a full strip down and clean up.

If all this is ok and it's still not running right, look into the ignition. Get another coil and CDI from a wrecker/****/FRP.

The stock pipe should give healthy low end, these were torquey bikes for the size. An FMF would be better all round. (Plus about half the weight). But try and get it running right first.

If you replace the reeds get VForce reeds - good power increase for the money - and adjustable tension for low or top end boost.

It's worth going through it all. They're neat bikes. Simple, bullet proof and very light.

ps re-reading your post, the first thing I would check would be the jets and float height. Should be 35mm carb as well.

thanks arjay, abook was on the list i knew the tear down was to come some time i'm waiting for winter for what i payed i think ring piston reeds will do it justus all that for price of the pipe i'll let you know.

Get it running properly before worrying about making it run more powerfully than stock. It should run well with the stock pipe on it.

I got a new 1987 model. Changing to Boyesen reeds didn't do a whole lot for it, but using wore out reeds won't do much for it, either. Check on all the wear items before worrying about aftermarket stuff. Naturally, if the current (perhaps stock) reeds are worn, then go ahead and get some Boyesen reeds.

What silencer is on the bike now? If stock, have you tried to drain out the old oil and such?

i did'nt think of that, this weekend i'll tear that down ithink at the same time i'll clean the filter and check out the reeds pretty easy stuff , promotorsports on 48th av. is my local flint is great at this stuff he might even have reeds in stock.
