I am looking for a fun bike to tear up some dirt, mud, grass - nothing crazy race-wise --- getting 5 and 10 year old sons involved. 5 year old has been ripping it up with his pw-50 with training wheels for 2 years - he is ready to take 'em off and get screaming. 10 yr old is more cautious. Also have wife involved. So I am looking for a smaller bike that rips. These are the two I am currently considering. Thoughts?
1) 6'1" AND 190 lbs.
2) Moderately/above-average physically/aggressive
3) plan to ride- woods, trails mostly - tracks occasionally
4) Have ridden all my life - infrequently until about 2 years ago - getting back into riding again
5) I will not be racing
6) Routine maintenance will be performed by me - beyond that, local dealer will perform
7) I do not have a preferance to a brand/motor choice (2 or 4 stroke), although pre-mixing can be a pain
8) Yamaha, Suzuki, Kawasaki, and Honda dealers all within close proximity
9) Price range depends --- if new, the above bikes are within price range
10) I like to tear it up with the low end torque - also like tight trails, climbs, mud, roosters, etc. - the fun stuff.
Thanks in advance.

You are too big for an RM85. Forgetaboutit. The TTR-230 is a "nice" bike but it is heavy and has a limited suspension, even for a play bike. A TTR does NOT rip, it slowly tares.
Give some thought to the WR250F or a CRF250. Great bikes. They shred.

i'm a bit confused. is this bike going to be just for you, or your wife too?

This will be just for me. Looking for something that "shreds" but that I can just chunk around on with the kids.
Other than the typical specs and features, what can you tell me about the crf and the wr?

Are you talking about the CRF230? Or the $6000 CRF250? Yikes.
The WR250 has a 38+ inch seat height!? Sounds like a horse!

I have ridden the WR a few times, once on a very challenging trail. The bike really rocks. At 6'1", you'll have no problem with the seat height (I'm 6'1" too). The bike will work well, from beginner to advanced riders. I would give serious consideration to that machine.
I've ridden the Honda too, but not on a trail (on an MX track of all places). The CRF is a nice bike too, but I don't think it has the power delivery of the WR. It does however feel lighter and has a great suspension. It also has the Honda name, and all that goes with that.
Both have electric start. Both represent new technology that their respective companies further develop on an annual basis. Both are completely supported in the aftermarket. Both have great resale (if that ever becomes an issue).
Both are a great value.

Great info!!! How does the KDX200 (2003) compare to the WR250?
The wife will kill me if I buy another bike. I just bought her a DRZ125L --- seems a perfect fit for her. Funny story though --- she was so excited to get on it the first time, she popped the clutch and gassed it...right into a wheelie...into the right rear tailight on my truck. I nearly wet my shorts.

Wet your shorts with a KTM 450 EXC

if you ride a RM 85 L in the woods, you will be in the trees, i have a kx 100 and i occasionally hit a branch because of the uncontrollable power, but the has alot of power but is alot heavier. So, more trail=ttr 230, more racing and tracks=Rm 85L

Great info. Considering the CRF250X or an XR400, KDX200 or KDX220, or DRZ200 or 400. I will obsess for awhile before I finally decide on a deal and pull the trigger.
THANKS to ALL>

Get either the kdx's or crf. don't get a dr-z
Posted by: Zach_951---------------------
Get a WR250F. It has eas-to-use power but if you choose to get on the throttle, the bike rips!
Posted by: Xtremesports445---------------------
i don't think he likes the wr because of the high seat height, even though at his height he'd be fine.
Posted by: PSUBETA---------------------
Starting to rethink the seat height issue. What is the deal with the TTR's? No power?

Sat on a CRF230F today. Felt very comfortable. Also read about some easy mods to boost the pep and power of it. Specifically === uncorking the exhaust and rejetting. THOUGHTS?

Driving home from a hearing and saw a KDX 200 - 2002 --- 64 miles --- MINT --- $2300. Buying it tomorrow.

Done! Wholly power.
