clean it? i like the tast of mold!
ha no i have only put water in mine and i rinse it out and let it dry realy well its too hard to get soap out of the tube and stuff

Posted by: mylesc---------------------

I rinse mine out after a ride and throw it in the freezer until the next ride.

Posted by: brian2372---------------------

i hang mine upside down with a wooden cooking spoon in it to keep it open and i also put ice and a little fresh lime juice in it when ever i fill it up to get rid of the rubber taste and it kills germs and bacteria

Posted by: mojonito---------------------

i never put anything other than water in it so i didn't wash it. model of health...

I fill mine with Gatorade, so washing it is mandatory.

I sprang for one of the "cleaning kits" they sell for them. It comes with a long brush for the tube and also a plastic rack you can insert inside to hold it open while it dries. I use regular dish soap to clean it and then rinse it thoroughly. Make sure you remove the bite valve and take it all apart to get it clean inside. Then hang it on the drying rack for a day or three.

The big thing is to wash it as soon as you get home. Don't let it sit for three days and turn into a biology experiment or you'll be buying a new blatter for it.

My girlfriends dad is a bike cop and he has tons of them. He told me to use these "Camel Back" cleaning tablets. I guess they dissolve in there or something

Posted by: mideastrider---------------------

I only use water in my Camel Back. But will wash and rinse the inside with baking soda that leaves it clean and fresh. Also storing it in the freezer keeps anything wierd from growing in it. Drinks with sugar makes matters worst.

Posted by: mtk---------------------

Yes, they do, but Gatorade makes ME go a lot longer than straight water.

I'm on my second pack and when/if it aquires that questionable smell, I find that very hot water and a teaspoon of bleach, followed by a good shaking for 30 seconds does the trick. As with dishsoap, you have to rinse it out pretty good, then I stick it in the freezer till next ride.

Same here. Seems I always find it laying in the garage a couple weeks after the last ride and think why did I do that.

Lots and lots of soap and water afterwords.

I'm in the military and had lots of experience with camelbacks. Number one rule, if you put gatorade in it, make sure you clean it extremely well. If gatorade is left in it, it will mold badly and it's hard to clean out and you will end up just wanting to buy another bladder. As for just water, I've left water in it for months, and drank it becuase it is a sealed container, so water stays pretty well preserved. You will hardly ever get rid of the rubber taste, just like you can't get rid of the aluminum taste from beer out of a can; just the way things are. As for cleaning it, I personally use bleach, becuase if you are in a dusty environment (which is and understatement for riding around in a stryker in Iraq during the summer) you're going to put your nasty, dusty, gritty mouth on the bite valve and you can almost garuntee that before it comes out of your mouth, it's going to suck some of that crap in. Lord knows what floated into your mouth. Bleach garuntees that anything foreign inside the bladder will be killed. Just make sure to flush it very well afterwards. If you fill it up and get out to the trail and realize you're tasting bleach, don't sweat it. You can take a gulp of bleach and be fine. Sadly, I know this from experience. The "Camelback Tablets" are good to use, but it's really unnescessary to pay for that when it's utterly impractical. The only thing I would buy to use in cleaning bladders is the little frame that you stick into the bladder to keep the walls seperated so that it will dry. When you hang it up to dry, it tends to stick together and not dry, but if you use it regularly, you really don't need that either becuase being dry is only important if you are storing for extended periods. Like one of the other posts said, you can just fill it up and stick in the freezer when you're done cleaning it.

Well that's my two cents. Hope this helps.

Brian.

Water, baking soda seal and shake it up really good, scrub with a bottle brush and rinse thouroughly. I stuff a clean dish rag in to absorb any left over liguid. I like the freezing suggestion so that will be my next step.

Wait, you guys wash yours?

Ditto!

I only put water in mine, but I like to rinse it out anyway. I fill it with warm water and run it out through the tube, then freeze it.

Every once in a while I'll use one of those Camelback cleaning tablets in it also - which you can get at basically any sporting goods store.

I throw some rubbing alcohol in with a little water and shake it. I doubt it works as well as bleach, but it seems to do the trick. As long as its clean you can let it dry out. I've used this for years on bikes and hiking/mountaineering and have never had any problem.
