I've got the 06 Thor Force guards and they are wicked. I also had a pair of the 05 Thor Force and they looked good as well. I didn't get the wear them because they were too small. Both are good choice IMO.

I like the MSR Aegis knee/shin guards. Under $30 too.

do they fit over the boot(shin guard)?
do they make a thigh/knee guard?

Let's see.
If your pants go into your boot,
and the knee guards are under your pants, how exactly would the guards go "over the boot"?

I have the thor force and love them. If your like most stick boys that ride dirtbikes you won't have a problem getting them in your boots.

Mine fit but the velcro on my Tech 8's barely touches. The top strap works just fine though. It seems like almost all the equipment for dirtbike riders is made for stick boys.

Why not just get boots with adjustable straps? I have big calf muscles from running, biking, and skating and I have my straps barely pulled out.

I've been riding/racing for over 25 years. Thank God, I've never had a knee problem. Many, many, riders have wrecked their knees. Buy the best you can afford to reduce the risk. I'm finally at a point where I figure I've been lucky too long to get by with the $30-50.00 guards. The next best step up are only $225.00/pr Vision knee braces with about 500% better hinged protection. Think about it? They will last at least 5 years.

I almost bought some knee braces instead of knee guards. I did about a weeks worth of internet research and came to the conclusion that if you have healthy knee's you don't need braces. There are some that say you do, there is some that say it is bad for you. It is about a 50/50 split.

While I respect your opinion, I must say that a week's worth of research is a lot less effort than three month's of re-hab. Wish I did a little more research.

That is what alot of people say, and I think other than your back, your knee's would be probably be one of the top three things that would suck to mess up. From everything I've read it is about fifty fifty if you have HEALTHY knee's to begin with that braces are of any good to you and some say that they are bad.

I would say talk to your doctor but at the very least get some good knee guards. I know I feel absolutely naked without mine on, and they aren't uncomfortable either.

SolidState what did you do to your knee?

Posted by: Solid State---------------------

Right knee has torn acl/meniscus (et al) - two times. First time no knee protection and not a complete tear so I just lived with it. Second time had knee guards and got lots of damage and needed ACL reconstruction and meniscus removal/repair. Part of the meniscus was torn and folded into the joint - oh mamma that was fun.

The ACL was not completely torn so the Dr. used a probe to burn the ACL to initiate repair and tightening of the ligament. Should have gotten the full replacement as it's probably only ~70% recovery and required 3.5 weeks in imobilizer. That left me with NO muscle strength and months of re-hab.

I have no good knee to compare it to as I believe I tore the left ACL pushing my van in the snow last winter. Then I got it caught under the bike a month ago when I was play riding with my five year old. He fell on his bike and I pulled to the side and tried to lift his bike up causing me to slowly fall over onto his which hyperextended the joint. Of course, I had no brace. I'm pretty sure a brace would have avoided this last one. The other two injuries were basically twisting and impact so I'm not completely convinced a brace would have done much better than a guard, but if I had to do over I'd rather have a brace for protection.

Tyesai - I agrree, back injuries must be up there on the list. Wrists are no fun either. For that matter, reconstucting face muscles and losing four teeth blows pretty bad too.

I will absolutely NOT ride without braces. After 2 knee surgeries for non-bike related injuries, I would, and do, wear braces on my healthy knee to possibly avoid serious knee injury. Even figuring the cost of decent braces, it is still a bargain compared to the time and pain of rehab. I have been fighting knee problems for over 25 years, and it's no picnic. Save money on the bling and spend it on protection instead. It isn't fool-proof, but it raises the odds of injuries to the soft tissue and joints considerably.

i bought a pair of FOX shin/knee pads for like $12 and they dont get in the way and they are a great addition for some extra protection ... lord knows i need it
