anybody make a ceiling hoist for motorcycle?

I have seen them for sale for a few hundred bucks, but it seems like it would be pretty easy to make one for less than $100. Anyone do it, and how did you do it?

I use a tie down and a come-a-long. Never saw a commercial one.

what is a "come a long"???

Posted by: mojonito---------------------

just go to home depot and ask. it is like an oversized ratcheting tie down (for lack of better terms). heavy duty

EDIT: Pic somehow got deleted off my computer

I figured out what one is. Would that be better or would a hand wench at the floor level, using a heavy duty pulley on the ceiling work better?? I worry it would fall, but if these things are rated at 2000+ pounds and the bikes are just over 200.

while i see no problem putting a wench to work in lifting my bike, i think you would hear less complaints if you used a winch and then found something more interesting for the wench to do... i remember a yamaha print add a number of years ago were they made the same error - it was something like purchase a new atv and you can get a free warn 1000-wench -- not something i really would want!!! at least not a warn one...

how about a pulley on a strong ceiling beam and use a boat winch to crank the bike up. make sure the winch, pulley, and beam can handle the weight. the difficult issue is how to attach to the bike so that it is lifted in the horizontal position. obviously you can attach to handlebar at front but where are you going to attach to the rear of the bike?

swingarm

I didn't mention I attach the tiedown to the bars. The swingarm may not be a little unstable.

this is what I was thinking about, but putting together a kit for myself and using some type of manual wench or come a long

I want a wench to work on my bike too. And serve me grog.

use one of the cranks that is intended to pull your boat on the trailer. these are rather inexpensive and vary in weight capacity from about 500-lbs on up. i would use the metal cable version and not the web strap.

i like this idea - may have to build a few for me -- esp as the bike inventory keeps climbing...

web site is interesting but don't think i will be parking my expensive (or cheap) car under my bike. they always seem to be oozing something - dirt, fuel, oil, something...
