Which one is better .. everyone vote :)

Posted by: Okiewan---------------------

Which one of these images do you like better?
And why if you care to comment.

Posted by: biglou---------------------

It's a tossup for me. I tend to favor landscape over portrait, generally speaking. I could see this one cropped tight on the bars/helmet/eyes area, also.

Posted by: squeaky---------------------

I like the second one better - it gives you a chance to focus more on the rider because there's less background.

Posted by: mdkuder---------------------

I like to see more of the track and that dirt looks sweet.

Posted by: Kawidude---------------------

I voted for number 2. I might have cropped just a tad looser on the sides, but I always like getting in close on the rider and bike. They're both great, but I like seeing the little details you pick up when stuff is cropped a little tighter like the second shot.

Like will says "It's not dirt, it's choclate cake."

Posted by: FruDaddy---------------------

If the first had a little more of the background, I might have chose differently. I just think that the rider took up a little too much of the frame.

Posted by: nikki---------------------

I can't pick. I see benefits to both versions.

1 - fits very nicely on the pc screen (like for a screen background), has a nice clean background (doesn't get much cleaner, LOL), this version would be good for more of a track website shot or something for the track.

2 - great rider shot for the rider like to print & frame, see more detail/larger image of rider in the sizes you posted, good for like a mag article featuring the rider, and I tend to crop to the rider similar to this in my own mag/web shots.

Posted by: Philip---------------------

I like the second one better as it fills up the pic.The first one is good tho as it is in the "one third" of the frame. I would have to say its preference over talent. You are getting really good Okie, you better be careful you might have found another career.

Posted by: Squid31---------------------

I voted for the first one because I like a bit of space. I also like how the bike/rider is further to the right, leaving space to the left for him to ride into.

As far as other things go, that shot looks exposed perfectly. There is still detail in the black, and the whites are barley blown at all. The only thing to make that shot any better is to add 3000 people behind him cheering him on.

Posted by: Chili---------------------

I like tight crops but chose the first due to the foreground in the second one.

Posted by: oldguy---------------------

I guess I like the tight crop with the rider filling the shot

Posted by: rm_racer---------------------

Nice shot.
I picked the second one for 2 reasons.
1) The tighter crop makes the effect that there is more action in the shot. With the first crop, the action was all to one side and the left side was kind of empty.
2) The second crop has a bit more detail due to the extra size because of the cropping I am guessing.

If he had been a bit further into the corner, taking up more of the picture, I probably would have picked the first one.

Posted by: fitter---------------------

i picked the 1st one, only cause now its my wallpaper.
Great shot, and awesome detail & lighting.

Thx Okiewan

Posted by: TxCr250---------------------

I like the first one.

Posted by: evenslower---------------------

#1 - Just enough background to give a little perspective. After seeing the 1st the 2nd seems like its missing something.

Posted by: pyrofreak---------------------

I like 'em both. Really, really clean shots, I love pictures like these. No crowding what so ever, and the clarity is AMAZING. I love photography myself, but mostly landspaces, especially rivers and forests, so I chose the first one.

Posted by: Okiewan---------------------

and the clarity is AMAZING.
Bah! It's just a camera phone
Thanks for the kind words.
Thanks to everyone for the comments. Been an interesting "test" for me and actually came out just about like I thought it would (majority liking the landscape). Sometime I'll post why I think that is.

Posted by: cjfolse---------------------

I like scenery in motocross pictures. Gives more feeling for where the rider is at on the track rather than just in a turn or in the air.

Posted by: Jon K.---------------------

I gotta pick the first one.

For an action shot to work, there has to be context. Take out the context and it is just a pretty motorcycle.

Sort of like the TV coverage the they sometimes do of simply following a bike around an MX track. The racing is lost if we can't see the track, and the other competitors.

Posted by: Hampo---------------------

The 2nd one concentrated more on the bike and the turn. But ive seen that all before what defines a pic for me is the background and scenary. Good pic

Posted by: crazshane---------------------

I like the first one better. I think that one showed more landscape, which was sweet, and you could see most of the picture in one screen, without having to scroll down.

Posted by: RAHRAH---------------------

I would like seein the first one so that I can tell more of the teritory, what situation the riders facing = a realistic picture. the second looked to have more intensity on the rider, more of what you can find in the magazine hype. thou I did see a kdx 200 blasting throu th trails on an offcamber single track wheelie appearing to go another 75 feet in a magazine.

Posted by: Hale701---------------------

The 2nd one

Posted by: jason33---------------------

the second one -its closer more in your face action
we ever going to get some mx,and supercross -(baseball) type cards made up!!!!
kids will love them too

Posted by: cnielse5---------------------

The first gives me more of an idea of what the terrain is like.

Posted by: Idaho525---------------------

#1. Causes my eye to move across the picture... brain sees more of a horizontal effect on the rider. Second picture causes my eyes to move up and down, brain converts to a more upright interpretation of the rider (not as aggressive).

Posted by: Reesknight---------------------

I like the first one. Gives more of a feel of the action to me plus it puts the rider's torso in the center of the pic so it seems balanced to me where the second one does not.

Posted by: BBking25---------------------

i like the 2nd one because i can see the rider more vividly (color wise of course) and you can see his eyes staring at the camera better

Posted by: budlight---------------------

I like the second one better.

Posted by: medwaste---------------------

Definitely the first picture. More action.

Posted by: TheGrinch---------------------

#1 - Would have nailed it for me if the background had been thrown out off focus a little more. The shot gives a greater sense of the angle the bike is leaning on, the roost being generated, & the direction he's heading.

Posted by: metrickkruzer---------------------

#1 Best

Posted by: crazy4nitro---------------------

#1 Due to showing the track more.

Posted by: pidro_el_pirata---------------------

I had an inspiration and cropped the first one with a rotation so that the dirt bike was vertical and everything else is sideways. It looks kinda funny and I figured I'd share with all you guys:

Posted by: Ivy---------------------

is that you in the photo?

Posted by: Psygn0sis---------------------

The second one is far better. It's in your face. Very much a photo you see in a magazine.

Haha, anyway, i like the first pic, it seems fuller.

Posted by: Jaytree---------------------

First one fits the whole screen better imho.
Either way, excellent shot!

Posted by: SadPanda7---------------------

i like the first one because its not all cropped. and that track looks like heaven

Posted by: Matt 193---------------------

I love both but vote for the secong because you can see more off the track, and it shows more action. In my eyes at least.

Posted by: Z0RR0---------------------

First one gets my vote.
I generally prefer landscape, and the 2nd one is far too tight, but that's my personal preference.
However, the first pic gives a better sense of speed and movement because you can see where the bike is coming from and where it's going, and is closer to the rule of thirds.

Only way I'd have voted for the 2nd is if it was a tight crop on the look of the rider.

Posted by: T-Bone1---------------------

I would have to go with the first one. I like how you can see more of the track.

Posted by: shifter48---------------------

The 1st one does it for me with the area to the left for the driver to be going into...Also, I always like to see the drivers face and eyes on shots like this, show how intense they are...looks like he's not slipping the clutch in the berms..how long has he been driving????
Exposure and fucus right on
Gregg

Posted by: Okiewan---------------------

He's been "driving" for some time I'm sure, the kid is fast.

Posted by: olderndirtmom---------------------

The dude looks evil in the second!

I vote for number one. Like to know where he is in space and time.

Posted by: Micahdawg---------------------

Since this thread is still alive. I like the second one better only because it is cropped more symmetrically. I prefer a bit more of the landscape in the first picture, but the rider is off-center to the right. I think the cropping on the left is a too much, but to the right is -just right-. You get some landscape, but not too much. If only it was cropped on the left as it is to the right I think that would be money!

PS. I just cropped the left side in more on the 1st picture (mspaint) and I definitely prefer that best.

Posted by: Micahdawg---------------------

You learn something new everyday.

Posted by: Okiewan---------------------

Photogs typically try NOT to center the subject ... "Rule of Thirds" . The idea in the wide shot is to either show where the rider came from, or where he's going, thus, that particular crop.

Posted by: Micahdawg---------------------

Since I had to look it up, most of the examples I saw showed much more area to the top and/or bottom of the "object" as well. Would your 1 picture benefit more from this?

Posted by: Okiewan---------------------

Not in my opinion
Seriously tho, every shot ever taken could have been better in the photog's eyes, sometimes you just have to work with what you get, especially in non-posed (or still life) action shots

Posted by: D!rtbag---------------------

I picked photo one because it makes me feel that the picture is more realistic because it makes me fell as if im actually there kneeling at the turn as the bike kicks that sweet "Chocolate cake" all over the place. Id say if u r looking for a general picture to show like on a wall or in general, go with the first one. If u r looking for something to focus on you and ur bike, go for the second one. I personally feel the first one has more "reality" in it, while the other one has more, "Expression" in it.

Posted by: SC_Rider_427---------------------

I voted the second one, but after going back, there is something i like better about the first, maybe just having the backround?

Posted by: MotoX219---------------------

I think the first one is cool! It shows the dirt more and that is sweet, o by the way nice bike!

Posted by: werty1234---------------------

the 2nd one is better cause you can see the rider in more detail. that pic is sick anyway you put though

Posted by: peterttr230---------------------

I think they both look sick nice shots. The best part is you are looking at the camera. Keep up the good work man!

Posted by: bclark001---------------------

I like the top one it gives you more to imagine w/ the berm in the picture. but it still keeps your focus on the rider. very nice pictures though keep it up

Posted by: White_Wolf---------------------

I like number two.

It shows alot more detail and it the dirtbike fills up most of the shoot. Shows how intense the dude is. I like how you can see the dirt slinging more clearly and the dirt looks better then the green landscape

Posted by: FLsphinx63---------------------

I think the top one.

Posted by: Isobareng---------------------

First one hands down

Posted by: P0PWAR---------------------

I like to see the first one because it shows more dirt, and gives me a better idea of what he's working with.

Posted by: mike E72---------------------

both are great but the fist one gives you mor perspective

Posted by: cr85re---------------------

you look more aggresive in the first one.

Posted by: warrior91---------------------

Personally the background in #1 gives depth to the picture. Focus on rider good with beautiful background that does not overpower frame.

Posted by: BigRedAF---------------------

Nice dirt!

Looks like the stuff in Burleson, TX. The dirt in AZ sucks! I remember tires lasting forever in Texas, out here they die in one weekend.

It would be nice if the guy with the camera would have taken the shot 1/2 second later and captured some roost.

Posted by: wake_rider---------------------

I like the first better because your use of negative space. You get more of what is going on and less of just a rider on a bike

Posted by: LEllis7motox---------------------

I like the first one better but if it was a poster that would go up on a wall i'd go with the second one.

Posted by: carter76112---------------------

I prefer the first one, it gives a better sense of motion, draws the eye to all aspects of the frame ... the soil flying away from the rear wheel, the leg thrusting forward, the lopsided grin on the helmet :-) Great pic!

Posted by: zachattack1---------------------

Both! The first one is good for maybe just a nice picture. The second one is better for a poster.

Posted by: ToddHawaii---------------------

I think the first is a better picture - I've been a professional photographer for 12 years....the first is balanced, and your eyes are drawn to the center. The second is off-balance, and unlike most fun action shots that look great up close, this one doesn't work. Now...if you had cropped it even closer, and cut off some of the bike/helmet......then it would work
