Emergency Room visits?

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

Posted by: 2-Strokes 4-ever---------------------

Certainly, if you've been riding for any time, you've been there.
For me......concussion, collarbone, ribs, funky knee, finger, both wrists, seperated shoulder, titanium plate and 8 screws in ankle. Dirty looks from wife........priceless!

Posted by: IndyMX---------------------

Most of mine have been unrelated to racing. Only one racing ER visit so far. I had quite a few last year due to a bout of cancer. But haven't had one for that since Feb of this year.

Posted by: Jesel---------------------

The 'ol collerbone was my last ride to the E.R. But thats not really a major injury. I'm done whining now.

Posted by: gurt---------------------

hearing my ankle crunch after over-shooting a fairly long step down was what brought me to the er last.

Posted by: rickyd---------------------

None for me due to ridin. Ive been twice for stitches.. Broke my arm but waited 2 days to see the doc, was out camping, having a good time on my jetski and didnt wanna come home

Ive took the kid twice, both for broken collarbones, each side

Posted by: mg89---------------------

Only been in the ER once for riding my dirt bike. Broken collarbone, broken wrist, concussion, mest up knee, and stiches on my face, which left 2 really big scars. Now it's hard to attract the ladies.

Posted by: railer---------------------

still recovering from a upper humerous greater tuberosity fracture. Funky injury, takes long time to heal. First MX related injury. I've quickly learned that ER visit is nothing compared to not being able to ride for so long.

ER visit is only the beginning of the frustration!

Posted by: MXGirl230---------------------

From riding only 2x once a few weeks ago for my shoulder and once back in '02 when my bike decided to drive me into the ground head first.
Non bike related yeah...um probably at least once, some years twice since I was 4...I'm 24 now.

Posted by: sparkysakitas---------------------

only one for riding three broken ribs and tire marks down my side
to many other times unrelated to riding (accident prone)
frac skull, wrenched ankle numorous trips for stitches
a few for my eyes

Posted by: 250Roach---------------------

Funny there is alot of colar bone injuries, I thought you guys would be up in the "Almost Vegtable State" with me from multiple concussions. Mostly broken arms, alot of torn ligaments, but never the ol Clavical, yet anyway!

Posted by: SpeedyManiac---------------------

Only went to the ER once due to riding (though after my last KO session I probably should have gone again) but I swear I spent half my childhood in the ER. Luckily I haven't seen it as much in the last few years, knock on wood.

Posted by: Pauly250---------------------

Two weeks ago I broke my lower leg/ankle...lowsided my ZX6 during a trackday. Had to have surgery,2 pins on one side,5 screws and a plate on the other.Just got my cast put on and it will be another two weeks before I can put weight on it. First broken bone,I thought it was just a sprain.

Posted by: XRpredator---------------------

I've had more visits to the ER from playing city-league basketball than I have from crashing a motorcycle (one to nothin'). Plenty o' visits just from being a kid, though. I've lost count at the number of stitches.

Posted by: kmccune---------------------

I have to admit that I checked the last one, but I have NEVER been to the ER for a motorcycle injury. I have been to the clinic after I cleaned up though. FYI motorcycle injuries: broken ankle, torn cartilage in left knee, broken bone in right hand( can't remember name... hand part of little finger), gravel road wipe out, posterior hamburger type damage
Nope home improvement has been the most dangerous "risk sport" that I have ever participated in. by far.......

Posted by: oldguy---------------------

No way I would want to really know the total but it is in excess of 20 that I remember.
Just in the last 4 years (and none got me an ambo ride to the ER (but my wife did drive me in a couple times)
Blown knee (riding)happened in OK but went to the ER in Wis
broken collarbone(riding)
Reconstructed finger (lawn mower)
Knee/ankle(falling off deck)
Wrist(work)
other wrist(got bootlace stuck in door as I ran out the door)
Kidney stones
Diverticulitis attack (happened at the track)
I know there are a couple others that I just don't remember right now and one I am not putting out in public
Then add in my son (he has never ridden in an ambo either)
Broke both arms at once (snowboard)
Collarbone (riding)
Broke one arm (snowboard) all these three were same year as my knee
Severe concussion (to be Xrayed for posible spinal which was neg)(riding)
Hyper extended knee (riding)

I think this is it and I hope our insurance provider isn't reading this

Posted by: nikki---------------------

In 9 years of racing, my husband and I have each had one ambulance ride (his in '01, mine in '03), and maybe 5 ER visits each related to MX.

Posted by: mdkuder---------------------

Freak accident when I cased a double the bike bottomed out and the ball of my foot hit the ground at the same time resulting in a pylon fracture to the ankle. I rode over the jump and it felt like a handful of gravel for an ankle, I didn't have any pain until about 3 hours later while waiting in ER. Wierd!

Posted by: CJG---------------------

I voted Five or less because I've only been to the ER three times as a result of dirt bike crashes. My career numbers including non-bike related trips to the ER would put me well in to the trophy category.

Posted by: GETMETOCA---------------------

Just once, last year. I was in the 24hour race and it was around 2:30 am. I had just got up this one long rutty hill and crashed. The footpeg imbedded in my left calf. I did not realize it was punctured until after I finished my lap and took my gear off. The muscle and fat tissues were hanging out of a big hole in my sock. I went to the emergency room and got 14 stitches. 5 down deep and 9 up top.

Sorry, thought this was funny. Amazing what those pesky shoelaces can do to you. Mine was from them getting wrapped around the pedals on my bike (yes both feet at the same time) and couldnt stop or put my feet down. Resulted in chipped teeth and lots of skin loss when i smacked the tree at the bottom of the steps.

Only one visit due to my dirt bike and that was a broken ankle and leg at Dirtweek.

Posted by: yz250-effer---------------------

Ouch - lots of painful sounding (and some funny) stories here. I am in the 6-10 range, barely. Mostly smaller stuff: Broken foot, broken ankle, finger, stitches, concussion.
Has anyone ever broken a condial off the femur? I would have to say I have done that while at the same time effeciently removing the ACl and most of the patellar. Also a shattered kneecap.(other leg).

I figure at this rate, my body should be fully utilized by the time my brain short circuits.

Posted by: RMZRIDER---------------------

mines recent, first ever and ive been riding since i was 4, i shattered my shoulder on labor day and am getting all the pins out nov. 1. WOOT!!!!! i overshot a double and the bike cartwheeled on top of me, at first i couldn't move or feel my body so i thought i was paralyzed, then after that i wished i couldn't feel my body anymore, the worst pain i have ever experienced, i wish i would have blacked out,

god bless morphine!!!!!

Posted by: yz250-effer---------------------

Morphine, what is that, I don't really remember.....

Only thing I remember about morhpine is the suppositiories about 3 days later.

Which is probably a good thing.

Posted by: nikskx---------------------

I've been once my entire riding time, and that was when i had my 400ex, 4th gear fish tails, hit big rock on path = messed up bars and broken collar bone..

Posted by: tom_motox---------------------

at the moment i have a broken leg. over shot a landing ramp and snaped my tibular and fibula(compound fracture) god damm it hurt i never want to do that again.

How long is that supposed to take to heal up?

My buddy is still limping for his similiar breaks 2 years later. He broke them in 11 places.

I got to go friday but it wasnt moto related. Just cut open my elbow pit with some sheetmetal requiring afew stitches.

Sounds familiar...I broke both tib/fib back in May....Doc inserted a titanium rod and 3 screws...Spent 2 months at home, then went back to work light duty for 2 months...finally went back to full duty 3 weeks ago...Leg still gets sore, and swells at times....but it is getting better the more work I do, and of course the more riding I do....

Posted by: Indy---------------------

Cracked my pelvis, I wiped out on a jump. Drove myself into the ER (2 hours away), phoned ahead and they met me with a wheel chair at the door and they had an attendant park my truck. Getting the different shots for the X-ray was the most pain I have ever felt.

Indy.

Posted by: kaboom1371---------------------

broke my neck twice. c1 is now fused to my scull, broken leg, broken wrist, and a broken finger. all different wrecks...

Posted by: 2strokesrock---------------------

I cant take that poll because i have never ever for any reason been to the ER in fact I have only been to the doctor twice and I am not lying and I have been riding for 3 years on dirt bikes and since I was 8 on fourwheelers.

I know,I know im wierd
It might be because I dont ride MX I only ride trails and hill climbs

Posted by: whenfoxforks-ruled---------------------

Me 10 to 12, and my oldest son Ryan 20 something? Almost all mx related. I have been riding 36 years, raced hard for 4 years. Laid off for about a scattered 10 years in there. Ryan is 25, and raced since 6. I call racing hard more than 20 races a year. He maybe lasted 5 or 6 without issues, and laid off almost 10.

Posted by: J-man---------------------

i have got about 4 trips on me now. 2 were when i bruised my appendix.....not fun. 1 on the right wrist and 1 from breaking a rib.

Posted by: medwaste---------------------

Only twice in 3 yrs. Thank Goodness. And how many of us lie as to what really happened ( for insurance coverage purposes)? such as saying we "fell off a ladder or porch or bicycle".

Posted by: JPIVEY---------------------

I said none but, there's evidence that I'm lying, however I don't ride now so, none works for me

Posted by: High Lord Gomer---------------------

I used to have a reserved parking spot....but that was so I could haul "other people" to the hospital. Never me...nope, not me!

boots don't always help on really hard hits. I raced with a guy that did the same. flat landed a big down hill double and shattered both his ankles.

Oh man........ just the mental picture I get from that statement gives me the creeps

Posted by: whenfoxforks-ruled---------------------

If you bail, its worse. The death grip, and brace for impact! Face off the bars, shattered shoulders, wrists and of course, the ankles. That is when I really like the tech 10's!

Posted by: _JOE_---------------------

My bones are pretty decent I guess? I just get concunsions. I haven't been in the ER in 10+ years though.

Posted by: justalonewolf007---------------------

Everybody is just getting jinxed left and right in these threads...

Me two riding related visits. Both for my left collarbone (concussion as well the first time). The second time I showed up, it was like deja vu without the concussion...

Same desk clerk, same room, same person sitting in the room calling me an idiot and laughing at me...

Doctor was differnt though, I couldn't understand a word he said. I had completely overlapped my collarbone and put in a pretty solid attempt to puncture my lung...and he was freaking out as if I had broken my neck.

I tried to lie...but something about my gear must've given it away.

Posted by: rmc_olderthandirt---------------------

I haven't had any emergency room visits related to dirt bikes, and none at all for myself.

My kids, however, are another story. I was getting well acquainted with all the emergency rooms with a 100 mile radius of home.

I have learned a few things in the process.
Like, if you have a turkey 1/2 done in the oven, then turn the oven off and leave the turkey in the oven as you rush to the hospital the turkey will be done 12 hours later and be very good!

You get a little faster response from the emergency room staff when the sight of your kid's injury makes everyone else in the waiting room queasy.

Orthopedic surgeons don't give quantity discounts.

High school football generated the most trips to the emergency room. I am glad I worked reasonably close to the high school. I was getting used to the call from the coach saying my son took a hit in practice and he isn't responding quite right now....

Oh, the call I hated the most: In the evening, a call comes in. Caller ID indicates its from my son's cell phone. "Hey son, what's up?" I answer. The voice at the other end isn't my son and I can hear sirens in the background. Get this: he was sitting in a restaurant and got hit by a car!

Thank God for modern medicine.

I tried peeling the end of my index finger off, clutch hand, landing on some spode up at Maplehurst Illinois. After the splint and cut glove did not allow me to finish the day, fell in the first corner of the next moto. It was then I decided to go ahead and have it stitched up, locally. Some crap hole in Wisconsin, In walks this Indian that talked like the Inspector Clouseau(pink panther). So I am laughing at him, he puts my dirty bleeding hand on a sturdy board, puts a couple gauze pads on it, and proceeds to compress the wound to clean it out. Muddy boots straight up, right hand came real close to laying him out, and a few choice swear words. He says: I thought a big tough motorcycle racer could take it? A few more choice words and in comes the novocaine, not much better. Almost 30 years later and that sucker is still bent. But, it could have been worse, wonder what ever happened to the other guy?
