Disappointed in the McGrath invitational

It was sort of like watching CART or Neckcar nowdays, knowing that all the best competition is in europe racing F1. Sure you still win the money, but inside you know that you really didn't prove anything, except for being "the best of the rest".

Or does it? not only was Bubba and RC absent, but was Everts even invited, Reed, where was he, and where were guys like Millsaps, Villapoto, etc......

Something just felt like it was missing.

I'm disappointed it got bumped from my tv schedule... wanted to see it.

Im just glad that I got to watch a MX race for once. (Im not going to pay $50 a month for cable TV) In recent years it has mostly been on OLN and Speed.
Perhaps those riders you mentioned chose not to race at the JMI because it wasnt an AMA points paying race. Money isnt everything.
I thought it was pretty cool with the metal freestyle ramps and the bracket racing, I just hope that in the future more big name riders attend.

And the US Open is what? Mashed potatoes?

It's all about schedule ... there isn't enough time between seasons, testing, the MXdN and the US Open? Being in SoCal you'd think the teams could pull it off.

As for the format.
It didnt come across on the TV, but it was wall to wall racing both nights, very small amounts of down time here and there, way more busy than a SX.

The 2-up racing was pretty cool, once the fastest were racing each other. Some of the early brackets were run-aways. Being able to see Grant go against Kevin and DV12 in 2-up was cool.

Will there be another JMI? No idea, without the TV broadcast/income, it didn't look to be profitable, WAY too many empty seats. If RC and JS showed-up? Who knows, but unless the date moves from in between the MXdN & US Open, I doubt they'll be there.

I enjoyed shooting it and tell ya what, you can play "Where's Okie" if you recorded it, LOL, I got in the way of the camera many times Clue #1: When Hansen and Sorby go 2-up, watch the top of the first turn.

Hahaha! Okie, that's funny. I was watching it today, trying to look for you. I've only seen you in DW photo's so I didn't have much to refer off of. I watched the 2 up racing, that was some exciting stuff. I liked how they had the metal freestyle ramps incorporated into the motocross.

I hope they continue to have the JMI in the future. I thought it was a pretty cool event and I very much enjoyed watching it.

I thought the concept was awesome but I agree too many top riders were missing. It did seem like there was a lot more show-boating going on than a typical SX race but I thought the metal ramps were cool.

TV coverage stunk

I liked the bracket racing the best. Grant on the 250 beating up the 450s was fun to watch.

I was really bummed to hear about Mcgrath breaking his neck (C7) and other injuries. (as reported on the TV coverage) I always enjoy watching him ride. I hope he heals up well.

I thought TP looked slow on the 450, It would've been cool to see him on his 2 stroke.

I thought is was a good first effort. I would have liked to have gone to it live if it weren't for schedule conflicts w my kids.

I enjoyed the diffrent format I really like the 2 man races. I loved the metal ramps. Travis pastrana's back flip was cool. I hope it becomes an anual event. I actually liked the fact that #4 and #7 were not there.

I agree that the bracket racing was pretty cool..... it was different for sure...

As far as WHY some of the top guys were not there here is what I know....

Reed is still hurting, they said so during the telecast at one point.

As far as Bubba, and Millsaps I read on motodirt blog that the teams wanted no part of those huge stunt ramps. They didn't want to risk any injuries. Probably the same with Villopoto and Alessi too.

The bracket racing was cool..but the TV coverage had way too many commercials..seemed like every half lap it went to an ad. It would have been cool to see 4, 7, 22 in the bracket race. I was at the US Open and we enjoyed the hot lap deal...it was pretty intense especially the DV goon ride!

That may be the bottom line why the top guys are not likely to attend - even without the ramps.

It was a good event, however the network coverage stinked because it ran into nascar or whatever and then there where commercials like all the time, thank god for dvr, I was able to FF thru it and see it a lot quicker.
This is a good sign for the sport...I hope they have another invitational.

racing was good for a fix, ramps were ok,tv coverage was lame.It had the made for tv vibe and wonder if it'll comeback, lotsa of mt seats...

So I was watching one of the races which involved Josh Grant and the guys mentioned how incredibly loud his bike was. They said it was the setup he wanted to ride in Supercross but it wouldn't pass the sound restrictions. With all the personal struggles McGrath is having regarding the sound issues in his own back yard, am I to believe there was no sound enforcement in place at this race? How does that make any sense?

Posted by: Okiewan---------------------

Without a doubt... Grant's 250 was by far the louded bike on the track.

I thought the head to head racing was really cool and a great idea....When you have only two riders going at it you reduce the chances of some pileup, getting shut out, wrecking, or watching a rider struggle getting pass a blocker....

You get straight up racing...It would've been alot better if there were faster riders there to compete with KW but I though it was pretty cool.
