Tell me about late model RMX's...

Not sure if this is the right forum to post this but oh well:
I am interested in any and all info on late model Suzuki RMX's. I looked at a '98 model earlier this summer and I found out the guy still has this bike and still wants it gone. It was pretty clean looking and other than a number-plate and full FMF exhuast it looked bone stock. It had obviously been sitting for quite some time, probably a year or two at least.
Anyways from what little info I could find on net I have gathered that the 97-98 RMX is basically an early 90's RM250 with a detuned engine, wide ratio transmission, convential showa forks and a lighting coil. I also read the RMX makes close to 40 horse in stock trim and weighs 15-20lbs more. Any firsthand/secondhand impressions of the bike would be helpful. I'd also like to know how reliable are these bikes? Could it compare to a KDX if well cared for?
Thanks for reading.

It also has an 18" rear wheel, kickstand, large/slim tank, heavier flywheel, and offroad power and tuned suspension. It's a bit heavier but still turns like a Suzuki.
The best you can do for it is what was already done - aftermarket exhaust. Then springs for your weight (stock is for 145-165 lbs), tall seat foam and offset top clamp (BRP or Scott's; same maker) and your choice of fat bars. Oh: and an OEM '89 RM250 head gasket ($12) or Cometic Hi-Po top end gasket set. 38-39mm PWK if you care to swing it as it is less tempermental than the stock PJ although some can get it to work well. A steering stabilizer is awfully helpful too.
Eric Gorr can can fine tune the power characteristics to your choosing; moreover mill the head and dome for next to nothing.
Email me your snail-mail addie and I will send you a photocopy of an article comparing the RMX to the 220. In summary, what they said was true, for a change: the RMX was made for the national enduro circuit with has the suspension and engine for it, whereas the KDX for trail riding. (I had both, as well as an XR250R.) The KDX is a step up from the XR, and the RMX a similar step. My summary: the KDX was light and fun but lacked the beans to scare you or do that huge hill, and required much more clutch work; all my sons and I preferred the RMX for spirited riding as it had the grunt and quality suspension and was slim even by today's standards.
As for durabilty, I spent very little time wrenching my RMX; it was over built from the factory and nothing ever broke. There were a few rare instances on the 'net who have had exhaust valves kiss the piston.
Speaking of exhaust valve do clean it every top end or ring change as they get gummed up.

Another vote for the RMX -- I've been really pleased with my '90, its been completely reliable, has great manners in the tight woods trails, but also has the suspension and power to put a big grin on your face in wide-open areas too.. Mine has all the performance mods done to it, and it does everything I ask of it. Sometimes I've thought of trading in for something newer, but every time I get out and ride it, I quickly realize that it'd be just plain silly to get rid of it, especially since I'm not racing or anything. Do all the normal routine maintenance, and it'll be just as reliable as a KDX.
