What is the difference

What is the difference between a motocross bike and a trail bike, besides the suspension and the price? I am trying to educate myself before I purchase a bike, and cannot find much on this. It is probably common knowledge to anyone involved in the sport, but I am a novice in the truest since of the word.

a motocross bike can be a trail bike, but a motorcycle manufactured as a "trail bike" has less agressive suspension, maybe drum brakes, not as stout of frame . . . basically a second tier machine. Hence the lower price.

But, trail bikes of today are much better than those of the past.

From what I know if you get a trail bike it is most likely not going to be as fast as if you got a motocross bike. Also, your motocross bikes will usually weigh less than the trail bikes.

Motocross bikes are more often 2 strokes while the trail bikes are more often four strokes.

I am pretty new to this as well, and the last thing I want to do is give someone false information so please anyone correct me if I am wrong.

Umm...more and more are on 4 stroke MX bikes. Take a look at the upcoming SX season and pay attention to the fact that no one is on a 2 stroke.

There is a difference between a 4 stroke MX bike and a 4 stroke trail bike.

I have noticed that 2 strokes are becoming obsolete....why is that?

Because the liquid cooled four strokes are able to rev to the moon now and they have some serious torque. That is where all the technology is going...... Although, have you guys seen the new KTM 250 SX, it weighs 9 lbs. less than the YZ125.
