I need help in deciding which one to get? I am going to be riding in the woods mostly and occasionaly in the NM desert. The price difference in not an issue. The two models in question are 05 KDX220 or an 04/05CRF250X. any body have any helpful hints or cautions? I am 6' tal and 200 lbs. Also I will be riding with my son who is just learning how to ride so I am sure I will be going at a slow pace for a while till he gets up to speed.

I'm the same weight and do the same type of riding on a KDX220. Both bikes will get the job done and you will have a blast on either. The 220 will be simpler in the maintenance dept and less cost of ownership. The 250X offers much much more modern ergonomics, electric start, and cool factor, and is probably a much better bike to ride all around (I've only taken one on a short test drive). Dialed in, the suspension on the 250X is night and day better than the dated 220 lower cost design. But, I still love the 220 and there's not a trail or hill I feel I'd need a 250X to get through or to the top of.
