leaning towards a yz250?

Wondering what your opinions are. Here's my info:

27, 5'7", 160 lbs, athletic (triathlete, surf), my first bike was a cr250 when I was 19, then I had a drz400, then a raptor. I ride aggressively, and would eventually like to have competive days at an MX track practicing, but probably won't race, as of now. Being my size, a bike like a drz400 was a handfull. I liked my cr250 but it was my first motocross bike and I was 140 lbs back then. If I was in prime shape and this is very realistic, I would be 145-150 lbs with little training. I ride in Glamis for fun and would like to be able to do some big jumps. I also plan to ride some flat desert in ocotillo and some other trails throughout california. I'm from San Diego. I'm leaning toward a yz250 since it's apprarently a really good bike, it's also light enough that I think I could handle it better than my drz400, that bike wasn't fun to jump, it would take over in the air. I would go even lighter like a yz125 but I don't think it would be fun in the sand dunes. I have about $3500 to spend on a used bike and I've been seeing 03-05s for that kind of money in the trader. Any suggestions? If I did some racing, it would probably be hare scrambles or something like that in ocotillo. thanks.
