Taking off fast on a 450

Any tips on how to take off fast on a 450. When I try to take off fast I put it in second gear and it is almost impossible for me to take off real fast without eventually pulling a huge wheelie and having to get off the throttle. I have as much of my weight as far forward as I can, I weigh 225lbs, am I getting too much traction combined with too much power?

I'm a beginner at this sort of stuff, but what I'd think is clutch. Or maybe even gearing it differently.

Keep working at feathering the clutch to a smooth complete release. If the front end comes up, instead of rolling off the throttle or hitting the brakes, tap the clutch lever and the front will drop right back down.

Been workong on that, I need some knee pads . I tapped the clutch when it started to do its wheelie, my bike just continued right on up and over. Guess I will keep working at it, mabee you have some more knowledge on this issue.

since my son switched to a 450 from a 250F this season I noticed he is in a wheelie (about 6 in high) almost the entire start straight. Of course he only weighs about 160lbs.
He is almost sitting on the gas tank, we had to put on a step seat to keep him from sliding back on the seat in starts

A perfect launch is one where you're up on the gas tank and the bike pulls the front wheel a few inches into the air for the entire straight. Of course, with as much power and traction as the new bikes make, it's hard to keep the front wheel a few inches off the ground. Some guys run hole shot devices which compress the front suspension until you hit a bump and it returns to its normal full travel. This lets you launch harder right at the start. But, you're going to have to learn to work the clutch and throttle. Starting in a higher gear sometimes helps, but you'll smoke the clutches if you're not careful. 2nd gear is probably best.

Then you need to "tap" it more. Practice doing and controlling wheelies- if you can control them, you're 9/10th of the way there.

What do you think about moving my forks up in my triple clamp, what will the full efect of that be, not just for the launch, but the over all handeling of my bike. I heard that mentioned a couple of different times in reference to the 2005 RMZ 450. And if so how much do I move them.

To perfectly launch you must sit as far forward as possible. So basically sit on the tank and you must remember to SQUEEZE your knees against the tank. As hard as possible. Lean forward with your head over the bars and look ahead.

+1. you could also try slapping on a holeshot device. it pretty much compresses the forks on starts to prevent you form doing wheelies. lower the front wheel( no wheelie)= faster start .

I think I figured it out, I had to get out of the mind set of my old RM 125, with it I could just put it in 2nd rev it high lean forward and dump the clutch. Its all clutch on the 450s, let it keep slipping while maintaining the 6-8in wheelie, when the clutch is all the way out grab 3rd.
