Choosing bikes for myself and my wife?

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

Posted by: mrliquid---------------------

Hope everyone had a great year!

we're both in our early 30's

I'm 6'4" and 205lbs and I know I want a fun 4 stroke that I'll trail ride and jump whenever possible. Not huge jumps, say 12 to 15 ft.

My wife is 5'8" 120lbs and wants to trail ride (never jump) and she's never ridden before. I also want a 4 stroke for her. She'll never race or anything more than moderate.

Thanks so much in advance.

My specs (Dude)
1) your physical size: 6'4" 205 lbs
2) How physical / aggressive are you? trail to excessive
3) what do you plan to ride: on public courses, trails, and with friends
4) Do you have any riding experience? 6 years
5) Do you think you will race ? no
6) Are you mechanically inclined and will you be doing your own bike work? do my own work
7) Do YOU have a preferance to a brand/ motor choice (2 or 4 stroke)? honda or yamaha and 4 stroke only
8) Do you have a dealer close by your home that you might use and what brand(s) does he carry? honda and yamaha
9) How much do you plan to spend on a bike? will buy used up to 4k
10) anything else that you think would help form an opinion- no

thanks Elliot67, I've updated my post

Well, I'm a beginner to this stuff.

I would recommend you the Honda CRF250X, but if you have 6 years experience on a decent sized bike a 450X might do you in.

I stopped by the dealer the other day and looked at both Yamaha's and Honda's 450 4stroke. The bike was nice and I know it has plenty of get-up-and-go, how's the 250 compare? I had a suzuki DR350 that I changed out the sprocket to better off the line performance

Not a bad recommendation although you may have trouble getting that used inside your budget. For the wife I would look at the CRF150F or an older XR200.

I wouldn't be able to tell you.

But given you've previously rode a DR350, the logical assumption would be that the 450X would be the bike for you.

Posted by: blmmx---------------------

you= yz450f
wife=crf230

Posted by: blmmx---------------------

or a crf450x
or a wr450f
for you

Posted by: blmmx---------------------

dont get a tt-r 225 for your wife!

Posted by: 150rguy---------------------

crf250x for you
crf230 for yourr wife

Posted by: mrliquid---------------------

why not the crf450x for me? just curious

Posted by: 150rguy---------------------

I dont know, I guess if you've been ridin for six years the 450 is ok.

Posted by: mrliquid---------------------

I get bored really fast so I figured why not just get the best

Posted by: 150rguy---------------------

Yup

CRF450X would be awesome for you. But I wouldn't recommend a new CRF230 or TTR230 for you're wife, as they're heavy, suspension isn't all that great and they're underpowered. An XR200, or like Chili said a CRF150F would be good.

i would go with a yz450F or a WR450F for you.

Yz has a more race inspired suspension for jumping and hard core riding, close circuit gear box also.

WR450F: Comes with a kick stand (very important for trail riding) more relaxed less responsive powerband compared to a yz, but still great. longer gears. lights, i believe the tanks are the same size now.

for your wife a WR250F or the CRF150

WR250F: good power for lightweight bike, but very manageble. radiator overflow container in the back of bike incase ya need it later on. lights, trip meter i do believe.

what would be better then anything is to go to the yamaha dealer and honda dealer and ask them for a test ride. just get on em and feel the differences for yourself.

great thanks

I bought a Honda CRF 150F two years ago and it is hands down the absolute best bike for a beginner or even a novice. I rode when I was younger, got out for a few years b/c I couldn't afford any toys, then got back into off road w/ ATV's. ATV's have become very unpopular in my neighborhood, but no one minds DB's so that's how I got the 150.

You didn't say what type of trails you ride. If it's all flat logging roads the TTR 225 or CRF 230 will be ok. They're both way heavy tho and any hills or rough terrain could be a problem.

I've outgrown the 150 and just got an 07 KTM 200 XC-W. I still have the 150 and have no intentions of selling it. It's def a 12.5 on a scale of 1-10!!!!

I know you said a 4 Stroke but why not something like a KDX? They have bulletproof engines and are one of the best trail bikes around. They have great low end power also which is critical for a trailbike and they can pull up top too. They also aren't really expensive and should be able to be found easily inside your budget. This is just my opinion.

The TT230 with electric start is a pig. It will weigh more than double what your wife does. A tt125, XR200 will be a better fit.

Any trail oriented 250F is would be a "fun" trail bike. You don't have to be as on top of things like you would on a 450, a little too much throttle here or there can really get you into trouble. The WR's and CRFx's are plenty competent in the air, too.

An 06 or 07 CRF150F for the wife would probly be the best bet. She will thank you for the electric start. You could choose a 250X or a 450X, but remember you are riding with your wife, it can be harder to put along on the 450 as compared to the 250. I have a CRF230F and a CRF250X and I use the 230 to ride with the wife and kids. The 250 likes to be riden much faster than the family wants to go.
