ny riders?

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

Are there any? I'm in the beautiful but off-road unfriendly Hudson Valley near Kingston.

Posted by: RM_guy---------------------

I'm in NY (Binghamton) but do the majority of my trailriding in PA at Paragon with other DRNers. We'll be having our Spring ride in June so feel free to hook up with us. I'm sure there be an earlier "scouting" trip in April sometime.

I do ride locally but it is very limited since it's all on private land.

Where in PA are you? I ride mostly trails now but get back on the track from time to time. You should come down to Paragon with us!

Posted by: YZ/250---------------------

Im just minutes from Athens PA. Im familiar with the triple cities, done some contracting work up there from time to time. We will have to ride!!

Posted by: "rippinrol"---------------------

I'm in N.Y, on the otherside of the Hudson. I have ridden many miles of powerlines up in Kingston near the thruway. There are some places south of you near Newburgh, it used to be an ol' hare scramble course off of I-84.
A little cold now though!

I wonder if you mean Maybrook? The town closed it down this summer mostly due to the huge increase in the number of ATV's there. People started riding throught the farmer's fields, did donuts on a resident's lawn b/c he asked them not to ride there, some riders shot 5 cows w/a 22 cal. and 2 of the cows died. That's not including trespassing into the Stewart military zone. It turned into chaos.

I heard some people started riding there again and I saw maybe 12-15 trucks 2 w/e's ago, so maybe if we act responsibly this time they'll allow us to ride again.

I just joined NETRA this year. I'm planning to try a HS by the end of the year. Thanks.

Posted by: "rippinrol"---------------------

Yes Maybrook, there is a bar right off the exit we park behind it, I never had any problems.
It's kinda bad that we have to suffer from other stupid idiots who take it for granted.
CATRA is another place to ride it's up near Ballston Spa you have to be a member.

Posted by: trailqueen---------------------

Yeah, CATRA's the closest, but they have a pretty steep initiation fee and are 2 hrs away. Have you ever ridden the New Paltz power lines or East Kingston?

You might have problems if you go now, which is why I posted this thread. I was hoping some local boiys might let us know the deal.

Posted by: KDXruss---------------------

Yeah, I thought catra would be too much of a drive for you.
Just to let you know, catra has a guest policy where a current member can sponsor you for the day, free of charge. It gives you a chance to see what catra's like first hand before you decide to join or not. I'm sure one of us from this site would show you around, just ask.
Russ

No, never rode those trails, would like to though. Maybe this year sometime we can get a "DYDR ride" then have some cold coffee's after.

Posted by: RM_guy---------------------

I know I said it last year but this is the year I'm coming up north for a ride with you guys. Just don't tell Woodsey, he might faint

Posted by: "rippinrol"---------------------

Cool! I never met you guys (paragon riders) this year let's get something going.

Hey, don't threaten us!
Count me in!

Posted by: trailqueen---------------------

I was wondering if some of you CATRA guys could clue me in to what's involved in forming an off road club. I was going to ask via your website, but thought maybe other people might be interested.

Do you compensate landowners that allow you to use their property?
When you hold a HS or Enduro, where does the entry fee $$ go?
What about liability issues? I looked into getting insurance for a small riding area by me and couldn't find an insurance co. that would touch it. Do you just use release forms? Does that protect the property owner?
About how many volunteers does it take to pull off a small HS?

Thanks.

You should be able to get some answers here.

BTW.. Hello DYDR's, I hope they don't close Paragon, I'd like to get out there with the DYDR crew again.

Hey bud! Keep an eye out for something in April at Paragon.

IMHO it's way easier to join an existing club. The way things are going, unless you can find thousands of acres to buy there is little chance of starting a club. Most of the tracks in Dist.34, your area are in a real pickle with the towns right now. The noise issues and so on. Unless you are extremely wealthy and if you are you just made a bunch of new friends, join a club in the area.

Orange: Tri-State MC, Ron Edlin, sec., 4 Cranberry Ct., Wallkill 12589. E-mail: (Fred Najork, pres.) FREDfromNY@aol.com. Phone: 845-564-4814, Club Type: MC/E/HS

Try this.

Posted by: trailqueen---------------------

Thanks - I had their webpage bookmarked, but it's not there anymore. I'll try the email link tho. The other nearest club is CATRA, but they're 2.5 hrs away.

I was going to try to get permission to ride ay Maybrook NY. People have been riding there for decades, but too many machines and too much disrespect closed the place down this summer. I contacted the town supervisor and she said you can ride with written permission from the property owner. I thought it would be easier to get permission for a specified # of bikes that are all registered/insured. It's a great place to ride!

Posted by: OTHG_DAVE_858---------------------

Try Stateline that was on that list. Or join NETRA and go to a harescramble like you mentioned. I'm sure you will meet some people there that have places to ride. Now that you mentioned powerlines in Kingston, some of my friends ride there. I will do some research and hook you up with them. Well, I joined CATRA and woods aren't for me, maybe you could ride with Russ once to see the trails though. I don't think it's expensive to join catra, hell, I paid 165.00 to ride it once. If you do work parties its alot less expensive the second year. The fact you can ride for a weekend with nobody bothering you would be worth the peace of mind to me. Happy Hunting, Dave

More like take a dump.
Then again you've been singing this same tune for the past 5 years.
If you ever do take your skirt off and come ride with us I've got a "special" trail just for you.

There's a lot more to forming an off-road club than I can type. The AMA has directions on their website. My club, CATRA, owns the property where we ride and hold our race. Thus the "steep" initial fee. However you just paid $6K to $7K for a new bike. Another Benjamin and a half is a pretty small amount to have a legal place to ride. First time you get busted riding "outlaw" trails you'll pay a lot more than that.

Most other clubs either lease property or have permission to use a piece of property for a race. Typically the gate fee charged at a hare scramble is donated to the landowner. My former club in IL held enduros on private land. No gate fee was charged, but the nudist resort where we parked received a small donation. The other landowners would get a smoked ham at X-mas time and we invited them to the club bowling banquet where they got free beer and pizza. Keep in mind most of these landowners only allowed us to use their property when setting up the race and during the actual race.

Insurance for the race is handled through the AMA. The policy covers the club and landowners for liability during the race only. NOHVIS also offers insurance for events, but it costs more than AMA insurance.

It takes us about 4-months of work to prepare the trail for our hare scramble. You can never have too many volunteers, but I wouldn't recommend holding any off-road race (enduro or hare scramble) with less than 30 volunteers. About half of them should have previous experience. I've been the trail boss for four enduros, worked probably a dozen other enduros and about 15 hare scrambles. I wouldn't recommend putting on a race with all rookies. Things can get ugly fast.

Hey Woodsrider

Thanks for the post - it's just the info I was hoping for. I don't know if I'm committed enough to pull the whole thing together and I find that most people like the idea of a club only if they don't have to go to meetings. They also seem to be open to work days as long as someone else finds the trails, gets permission, obtains insurance, coordinates the dates and times and provides the food. They want to trade one or two workdays for a years worth of riding.

I was thinking of something very casual, not AMA sanctioned or anything, just a group that could offer a property owner one point of contact so they would know who was riding on their property on what date. I've been researching sportsmen clubs in general and wasn't aware how much was involved in getting one up and running.

I didn't realize you owned the property. The initiation fee isn't that steep when you factor in your insurance and taxes. You're a bit far from me tho. About the same distance as Tug Hill give or take 30 mins.

Hey - I'm a db'er not an atv'er

Posted by: WoodsRider---------------------

The NY state DEC doesn't differentiate between dirtbikes and ATVs.

A club must have meetings in order to conduct business. I've been involved with four clubs over the past 10 years and in each one 10% of the members do 90% of the work. However I've met some really great people by being involved with motorcycle clubs and have had some really great times riding with these people. It's not for everyone, but it is something I enjoy being involved with.

As far as access to property, insurance will be the biggest hurdle. People are lawsuit happy these days. Purchasing event insurance through the AMA is still cheaper than purchasing insurance through NOHVIS. You probably need a minimum of 250 riders paying between $40 and $50 to cover the costs for a hare scramble event insured through NOHVIS.

I seriously doubt Tug Hill is the same distance from you. We have several members who live down near you including the notorious "rippinrol" on this site. We even have members in CT, MA and VT.
