when i change the gear oil on my 04 220 its always very matalic silver in it.its now done 2000 miles and yesterday was the same.i change the oil every 500 miles and 85% of my riding is road use so im not heavy loading the engine most of the time.is this normal or is the oil im running crap?i use silkilene 10/40 light gear oil non sinthetic,it says its for off road competition bikes.what is a good protection quality oil you guys use?thanks

It's metal from the clutch plates. Some of us have to change our oil every time we ride, that's 100 miles. The metal wont really hurt anything as long as you don't let it build up too much. Switching to steel clutch plates will cut down on the shavings significantly.

Lucky for us the KDX comes with steel drive plates.

Some visible silvery deposits are pretty normal, especially after 500 miles. Gears break down oil quickly, lots of shearing forces at work in there. If it suddenly becomes worse you could have a bearing starting to go. But if it's always had about the same amount I wouldn't worry much about it. A magnetic drain plug would be a decent investment. It will catch the big stuff, and tell you if the contamination in the oil is steel or aluminum.

thanks guys,i will start changing oil more often and the magnetic drain plug sounds like a good idea.goin to try a different brand next time.will i get clutch slip with sinthetic or semi sinthetic oils?i put it in my kmx and had to take out clutch plates to clean them up because sinthetic made them slip real bad.

I would change it at the MOST 100 miles. 500 IMO is a bit long
