Hi Everyone,
Just found this website so hope I'm not being redundant but I'm thinking of getting a 2006 KDX200 to replace my Yamaha xt225. I would like to license it in AZ for use both on and off-road. I mainly want to ride to the many trails within about 20-30 miles of my house. I know it can be licensed but would I be happy with it? Any info about the process and success would be greatly appreciated, thanks.

My bike is plated, but I had it all done while in Michigan. From what I hear it is very easy to get a plate in AZ.
As for "happy" with it, I don't know, it depends on what you are expecting and looking to do with it. Cruising any kind of distance on road gets tiring. I've done over 60 miles in a day of all roads, but it's very uncomfortable. I keep my road riding to a minumum now.
Another issue you might have is fuel. If you are going to ride 30 miles to the trail and 30 miles back, you aren't going to do much trail riding in between. Or you'll be mixing oil at the gas pump. Not bad, but kind of a pain.
Hit up the "Search" funtion here. Quite a few posts about dual sporting.

In Arizona anything can be licensed. My friend's 2006 GAS GAS TXT Pro 300 is plated. I ride my KDX around town acouple times a week. Its not much fun to riding any long distances but alittle round town bike it's kind of fun, and the fact that I can ride 1 mile from my house to go riding is awesome.
Where in Arizona are you? I'm in Flagstaff, we'll have to get a KDX ride setup sometime for all of Arizona, I know of a few others but havent ridden with any of them.

Heck, you can even license quads out here. I've seen a lot running around Tucson on Friday and Saturday nights.
I too have seen a few other KDX's around, but not ridden with any out here. Depending on work I may be here quite a while, some of the guys at our customer always talk about going to Flagstaff to ride, so I might be making some trips. I've been to the dunes with them a few times now. Bike still is sitting with a flag and paddle on it right now. And blinkers. People look at you funny when you ride a "dual sport" in the dunes.

Hey Guys, Thanks for the info. I just talked to the dealer and they told me that it would cost about $500. for a kit to make the KDX street legal, that includes a battery with new headlight ,brake light, horn, and even turn signals. All that sounds great but adding $500 to the cost of the bike puts it out of my range even though I love it(took a test ride today-2 strokes rock!). Probably end up keeping my xt225. By the way I live in Peoria just outside of Phoenix.

Hi the Bleakness, what have you done to make your KDX street legal? If I could figure a way to do it cheaper, I'd get the bike. Thanks, Pete F.

search up, there are threads on successful dual sporters here. Don't pass up this bike because it might take you a while to make it street legal.

End of page three, start of page four, gives the requirements for street registration.
Technically you'll need to add
Brake light
License plate light
Rear reflector
Horn
Mirror
I know a number of guys that have passed with simply a head light, tail light (no brake light), a little bicycle squeeky horn, and a mirror. You don't need to spend your money on a kit. Between my Baja Kit and Moose lighting coil I spent about $550. If I was to do it again I would piece things together myself and save about three hundred bucks.

I bought mine street legal. I have the stock headlight, some brake light/license plate light assembly, an acerbis left side mirror, a horn that doesnt work (a squeeky horn would work though) and thats it. I doubt it would cost $500 though, check out acerbis because they have everything that you would really need.
I still say we have a KDX-only ride this summer/spring sometime. I'd like to ride with another KDXer.

I've heard Az is pretty liberal about plating dual sports. Here's a kit for $270 that claims minimum requirements for Az:

If you do get it street legal change your gearing. On my 1997 220 I’m running a 15/45. First gear is fine and at 60mph the power valve is still closed.

My KDX has headlight, blinkers, horn, tail/brake light BUT.....
NO battery.
Don't ask me how or why but it certainly hasn't got a battery of any kind.
