I've been using a pair of gaerne rsx boots that I picked up used. I've only seen good things about gaerne boots so far.
My question is as far as protection. Am I getting decent protection from these older boots, or should I consider throwing some money into some newer boots?

anybody???

My only experience is with the SG-10. If the RSX is in line with their quality, it's a good boot.

I would just hate to be laid out with a broken ankle and have somebody tell me "what did you expect with those boots"
I haven't seen anything but good about there newer boots. I think I'm doing alright.

They seem to be an older model of Gearne's entry level boot. Take that for what it's worth. You WILL get more protection from a higher end boot. At least you're better protected than work boots or tennis shoes.
I wore 2003 ONEIL Hardware boots for about two years. I found them on clearance for $125. They were a leather/plastic Italian Made boot with aluminum buckes. They offered good protection. I now have the SG10's. There is definately a difference between the two.
If you broke or sprained your ankle, would you pay $125 not to go through the pain and aggrivation? I know I would. That's the average difference in cost between an entry level boot and a high end one. Not alot of money in my opinion.
Don't forget about closeouts, this time of year last years high end boots can be purchased inexpensively.
Glad to hear your being proactive about safety.
Good luck, Steve.

I'm a clearance or even used type guy. Time goes so fast that the "new thing" feels like it's out of date within a week. And somethings only new untill I use it the first time.

Only problem with closeout shopping is finding what you want in your size. In my case it's next to impossible as I'm Mr. Average (12 boots, medium pants, large jersey). Nine times out of 10 everything on closeout is XS,SM, XL and 2XL (pants and jerseys), and really oddball boot sizes (like 16).
